Worst oil filter design

^THIS^!!! Talk about worst design ever.

 

Let’s put it under the cat in a transverse mounted engine, next to the radiator, and the high side ac line, and you can’t get it from the bottom so you have to burn your arm and spill oil all over the lower core support and not get a single drop in the drain bucket.

 

I take it you know exactly what I’m talking about.

 

what I do on mine is slowly unscrew the filter till oil slowly drizzles out into the pan, when it becomes a drip drip then I fully unscrew, even with this way I get a little splash but not as bad as a full unscrew

 

It's poked in a really deep position and there's a completely unnecessary piece of metal in the open area preventing any hammers, grips or even screw drivers from getting up there

 

Yea I typically do my own work but i bought the truck in the winter and had to get an oil change (just cause i didn't know how old the oil was) Never had a filter give me this much flak. I'd honestly like to know how hard he cranked it on

Would those even fit though? When i tried the grips they were probably smaller and didn't fit well at all. I'd honestly like to cut that small plate out its annoying as shit

 

Yup, I use these to get mine off.

 

So you pretty much just let the oil run all down the side of the engine and on the cross member?

 

An oil filter wrench is easy to get up there on it...............And it may be unconvenient to break it free and let oil drip into pan (not really that inconvenient at all) then screw it off and empty into pan but then the plus side is.....................You can fill/prime the filter since it faces up and screw it back on and then when starting back up the oil flows sooner than waiting for it to fill filter. The v6 is opposite - easy to remove but then filter is empty when starting truck. Personally, I'm happy doing the whole change laying under the truck rather than part up top then part underneath. Either way, as has been said, nothing difficult about it at all except I guess for the part where people have to pay attention for a minute to not make a mess. I can see where this could be a challenge for a lot of folks nowadays.....people aren't taught to, don't care to or are just not conditioned to have to pay attention much anymore.

No, when you do it right it drips off edge of filter into the pan below and nothing gets on side of motor or cross member...........

 

Makes you wonder what they use to tighten it that hard?

 

I hand tighten oil filters.

 

I have heard of so many people pounding a screwdriver through an oil filter in an attempt to unscrew it. Never once has anyone said, "I pounded a screwdriver through it and spun it right off". It's always, "that didn't work. Now what do I do?"

At this point, if you totally rip the can and filter paper off, there's a tool that has prongs that go in the holes of the filter base, and has a square hole for a 3/8" rachet.

 

I would never be driving a Chevy Traverse (unless it was a rental), so I would have no need to change a filter on one.

 

Filter wrench. SOP at most of the quick-lube places is to wrench the filters on so they don't have people coming back crying about filters weeping at the gasket because some tech with weak hands spun it on too loose.

So do most humans.

But the guys at the average quicky lube are closer to monkeys
