3rd Gen Poll: Rear End Noise howling when feathering throttle

Yes dynamat helped but I noticed a much more significant change after changing the fluid in my truck (both diffs and transmission).

YMMV but it helped my truck.

 

My parts finally shipped! They are coming out of Virginia and won't arrive until next Tues. Oh well at least they are moving now.

 

Just picked mine up from having TSB performed yesterday and wanted to weigh in on my experience.

First of all, GET THIS DONE WITHIN YOUR 36K MILE WARRANTY (even if you have an Extended Warranty through Toyota)! I reported this problem 2 days after I purchased the truck, and I had printouts/ documentation from every freebie service I had. Scheduled my service visit to take care of this and another TSB, and a couple of little things. Between my scheduling with the dealership and showing up, I crossed over 36K miles and I showed up at the dealer with 36200. They kept my truck all day and reported that this and another noise related issue would not be covered by my factory 36K or my extended warranty. Took me a week of calls with corporate (who didn't help) from myself and the dealer. We got nowhere. Finally, went back to the dealer where I bought the truck and asked for a refund on my extended warranty. A logical GM came to the rescue and took excellent care of escalating and resolving my issue. Parts were ordered on 4/19 and got the call that they were ready to go on 4/27. Dropped off the truck on Monday morning and it was done Wednesday at lunch. All parts were installed, with the exception of the pad which goes behind the drivers side rear seat belt area, which is back ordered.

For me the repair was a success. Issue is resolved to a level that I feel a logical person would consider a normal characteristic of the vehicle. First time entering the freeway, I heard the sound at exactly 51mph as always, but it about 30% quieter. What's different is that it used to make the sound at about the same volume all the way up to close to 65 miles an hour. Now, with the exception of 51mph, it's difficult to hear the noise when you feather the throttle at all. I really don't think anyone but me would ever notice the noise, even at the 51mph point. Keep in mind, this is without the additional pad which is part of the TSB. Whenever that comes in, I plan to install it myself and do some additional sound dampening on the back wall of the cab while I'm at it. I think it should get a little better even.

One other call out. Even though my VIN was not included in the rear diff leak recall, I did notice some weeping at that time and brought it to the dealer's attention. They said it was nothing to worry about then and possibly related to them trying to address diff noise at 5K mile service. Said keep an eye on it. When I dropped the truck off Monday, diff wasn't wet but it was clear that the weeping was all the way around the bottom of the diff, much worse than before. They replaced the gasket and torqued it down properly when they did this repair.

Question gents. My truck is currently at the dealer for this noise. I read of a tab that includes pads that go on the leaf springs but it says it to remove a squeak noise. What is the tsb number for he howling noise. The dealer has had my truck for 3 days but never mentioned a tsb.

 

That’s good news! So your howl was from 51-65 before? That’s quite the range!

Putting the pad in will be the most difficult part and even then it’s not bad. I was worried i would break something when i pulled the lower c-pillar trim off a few weeks back. I didn’t have the TSB parts at that time, but I wanted to stuff some foam in there anyways. Just take your time and it should go well.

Edit: Also, don’t let the seatbelt retract... took me a minute to get that figured out ha

Roughly 51-65. Mine's a manual which might make things a little different.

I ripped all of my interior out when I bought the truck to do my stereo install. I cringed when they said I was going to have to remove that plastic again, and no way I was letting the dealer do it. I have amps and a line output converter mounted in that location, not to mention all of my wiring. When I mentioned that I'd like to do the pad myself, he said "good, because it's on back order anyways. I'll call you when it comes in." Wonder if that will ever happen.

 

About how loud was the 51 peak? Hear it over the radio at certain volumes?

You are a smart man! I wouldn’t let the dealer touch my interior either. Kind of glad the TSB isn’t for my truck so I don’t have to worry about that...haha

Pad is super cheap online if you have to buy it. Mine should be here Tuesday. I’m going to sound deaden the entire rear seat area once I get everything in. Might as well since I have to pull it all out to put the pads in.

 

I would describe it as loud enough that a car guy might notice, but not too bad. I've been driving 4x4 trucks for over 30 years so they're all Cadillacs to me compared to what I grew up on. Anyone crying about this being a loud truck needs to drive my other truck for a day.

 

Ah, good to know! Sounds like yours wasn’t one or the real loud ones then. Yeah, this is by no means a loud truck ha I came from a lifted 1st gen as my daily so I feel ya there. I tested my howl again yesterday and I could still hear with HD radio set at 35. To me that’s loud and I have a bum ear (too many guns ha).

Welcome! Yours is included. Any TRD is (big rear diff). Us with SR5’s are not as lucky.

 

You’re probably going to chuckle when you see the flimsy low density pad. There was no way I was going to rip out a bunch of interior stuff to put it it. I folded down rear seat lifted the carpet by the pillar and crammed it in the area. Really can’t imagine it does much at all?

 

You are probably right. I’ll still open it up to make it easier to lay sound deadener around the area. I can actually remove the entire rear interior pretty quickly now. There isn’t too much to it. A few bolts and some snaps. Lot a of yanking ha

I've tried to stay on top of this thread and the TSB one, but has anyone with an access cab had the TSB applied to their truck, or had the dealer attempt to quiet it? My dealer has reported it and at least ackowledges the noise, but I got the 'they all do that' thing today.

The only thing that's 30 years old that's better than something made this year is scotch.

The fact that a 2018 Tacoma is even being compared to an old ass truck in terms of refinement is hilarious.

 

Hmm I’m not sure if any access cabs have successfully had a dealer apply the TSB. You do have a TRD so if your dealer is cool they may just do it.

Make them submit a DPR to Toyota. The more people that note it the better chance we have at getting the TSB extended.

 

They said they submitted a DPR and I asked them to note on my invoice that they heard the howl also. The Service Manager said he has an AC too and his is louder than mine so he's waiting for a TSB as well. I asked for a number at Toyota and will call on Monday. Just want a fix soon.
