What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I was going to use OEM Miller Blue paint but it was pricey at $14 a can. Instead I used Rustolem Industrial Safety Blue. The safety blue is an OSHA certified color or something so it’s very similar to the Miller blue.

The clear coat is Rustoleum Automotive brand. When I did my old toolbox I used the two stage USC clear coat off Amazon. I had adhesion issues with it so I just went for the cheap stuff this time.

At any rate I haven’t had good experience with any clear coat.

 

Finally got my Amazon header installed. Tip: Don't buy one

 

I really like that. How hard is it? Just have to find one I guess

 

Why is that

 

1. Didn't clear the trans lines at all
2. Was about 6 inches from the Cat
3. Donut gasket was way too big
4. Cat flange was way too small
You get what you pay for

 

Anyone have this problem.

Turn on your truck and 2 seconds after it dies. Does it with cold start and when it’s already warm. Someone said fuel pump is going out.

 

IAC / throttle body cleaned recently/ever? If never, might want to start there.

How hard is it to remove a third member? A '96 4Runner Limited came up locally and I wanted the locking 3rd Member.

I know on Fords you can pull a plate off of the differential and the axle shafts are held in with circlips, which are completely different from these trucks. Is the rear axle shafts on Toyotas only held in by the four bolts on the brake drum assembly?

 

Plus any ABS if it has it and brake lines. Other than those just pull the shafts out

 

It’s longer because the shock mount on the axle is further away from the top on the other side. When I got my truck someone had put them on the wrong sides and when I would lift my truck on the rack at work, the axle was tilted, because the short shock was on the long side, etc. no difference in ride quality. So I just switched them sides. One is like an inch longer if I remember correctly.

 

So I don't need to remove any of the brake hardware? Just the ABS and brake lines from that circle plate with four bolts?

 

Yeah because they are drums in the rear. No calipers or anything to remove

 

Awesome, let's hope that it's all still there. Sucks I can't use the whole axle though, if it ends up being the right gear ratio I'll have to find a housing for it.

You could just take the axle and cut everything off of it and start fresh. Atleast I think you can anyway.

 

What size ring gear is it?

 

Same as Tacomas, I don't recall what size it was. I want to say 8.4? But that's just a shot in the dark.

1996-1999?ish 4Runners had the locking 3rd members. They discontinued it after that in favor of what I believe was the center locking differential. My front differential is some weird rare gear ratio that never came with 4x4 trucks (4.30) since it only came with PreRunners. I found that the only other vehicle that used 4.30 in the front were early Limited 4Runners. I ended up using that aforementioned 4Runner front differential in my 4WD conversion. I believe Sequoias and Tundras also used the same differential system.

 

That's what I wanted to do, cut the spring perches off and weld on leaf perches. But apparently it's rather difficult to line it up perfectly. I also looked into modifying the stock housing to fit the E-Locker, but the locking 3rd member is different so you'd have to weld some new studs or something like that. Much easier to just find a Tacoma differential housing.
