I understand Having some rock chips, not a big deal, but for it to polish that whole edge off is pretty crazy to me.

I agree. I've been saying this whole thread that you should try to get help from the dealer. I'd clean the truck really well inside and out and bring it in. I'm just saying I wouldnt start dragging in random small chips and dings throughout the rest of the body unless there are so many in a concentrated area that it supports your case. I think the conversation of "hey look the paint is coming off like crazy in this clearly concentrated area" is a better argument than "and here's a ding, and there's a chip and another one here".

I drive on caliche all the time and have only 1 tiny rock chip on the front corner of the bedside that is the size of a pinhead in 37K miles. I wash my truck maybe every 6 months.

Do y'all live in the country? To me, this looks like an animal might've gnawed on that edge.

Sorry man, a speaker rattle will have me at the dealer quickly. Wind noise caused by some faulty rubber or gasket will also have me there asap. Scrapes on paint, even if on concentrated....not so much. Especially when it's obvious something has been rubbing on it. That's what OEM touch-up paint is for.

I recently noticed that my pocket knife's clip is scratching the B pillar. I found out it happens when I am parked and the car next to me is really close, not allowing me to open my door fully. I applied some OEM touch-up paint and now pay more attention.

Yeah... different strokes for different folks. I find it much harder to get a satisfactory resolution chasing problems like that you can't see. Complained about a speaker rattling when I bought it. Wasted my time and effort to bring it back so they could say they "tightened the screws". Bullshit. Not worth my time to argue so I just fixed it myself. Paint on the other hand....OEM touch up paint looks like absolute shit. I'd fight to get that fixed properly.

I agree with you, the hood has some chips also, but that will happen I understand That. I’m just at a loss for why it would be in that concentrated area like you said.

Let's agree to disagree. Touch-up paint if done properly is great. I have done sloppy jobs on the bumper...because well it's a bumper. On the B pillar I took my time and have to look really carefully to see it.

I think a lot will depend on not only application technique, but color of the vehicle. I used to have a 4Runner that was a pearlcoat paint and touchups blended in well because it was 'sparkly'. The touchups stick out on my non-pearl white Tacoma.

Looking for a thread on paint. Can a paint and body shop match 14 year old color, silver, 1C8 on door jam. Looking to get paint work done on the Tacoma. Just get a few areas spot painted, blended in. I have tried with proper Duplicolor, looks like a good match in the shade, get in sunlight, no match, original paint lighter, and 14 years old. Do good shops do this type of work ? My budget for this, plus installing my (I supply) new front bumper, is $1K. Start to source in NE Tennessee next week.

Yeah, any good shop can blend paint to match regardless of age. Question is how much you willing to pay for it? How hard is it to install a bumper? If you did it yourself you'd save a few expensive shop hours you could devote to paint.

Its not about the short time as much as how often rocks are thrown into your truck.Take it your dealer like I said and have them check your door alignment, you already know what they will tell you.

Just buzzed through this whole thread... Sorry if I missed some details.

    1. Where are you located? You mentioned gravel on roads in winter...I turned down a really good deal on a 2016 TRD sport with 12,000 miles (one winter of driving) because it looked like yours with the chips. Apparently it was a demo vehicle in Flagstaff Arizona that sands the roads with lava rock. Pick your poison I guess? Salt or Basaltic Gravel.

    2. How fast did you drive down that gravel road? I regretfully destroyed my 2002 Honda Civic hauling it down to the Lower 48 from AK on a car dolly driving too fast through the gravel sections of the Alcan Highway. Also, my 2017 TRD OR is in pretty poor shape in the same areas as yours. However, I drive a couple thousand miles a year on gravel roads every year and definitely too fast.

How bout a pic of the road in question? Is it possible that gravel is small enough that it was stuck in the jam when you opened the door? I know the gravel that horse tracks are made of in my area is abusive enough to take off powder coating on race cars, so anything is possible. Would really like to see the road

My 2018 paint is crap. Every time I wash it I find new rock chips. My biggest dislike with this truck is how easy the paint chips.

Thanks. My only concern is the sqeeze from middle of grille, to the bumper, area. Going to check out preferred paint and body shops, only interested in matching up paint at needed areas. 85% of the paint is great, just the areas needing attention. See what happens, the match is more important, and get experienced techs to massage it correctly. I think the $1K with me supplying the bumper, brackets, etc., is in the ballpark.

Stole this pic from another member on a different subject. Looks like you both share the same road...

Cheap paint that Toyota uses, guess they had too cheap out on ghe paint too add all those creature comforts everyone seems too demand on their trucks now,in order too keep the price reasonable.
