I just wanted to make a thread to emphasize the importance of jack stands while working under a vehicle.

It's something that many friends, family members, shop teachers, smart people, etc. have stressed to me over the years, but I never really listened...

I'm in the process of changing out my CV axles, and my truck was supported only by the rear tires, a (tiny) jack stand under the driver's side Lower Control Arm, and a Hi lift jack cranked up on the passenger side bumper.

Absolutely ridiculous. How stupid could I be?

I was pushing in the passenger side axle while laying under the truck when the entire vehicle shifted towards the driver's side, making a deafening crunch as the A Arm smashed into my driveway. Luckily, the passenger side Hi Lift barely held on, so I didn't have to become a stain on my truck's undercarriage.

I just banged up my right knee a bit and am not walking right, probably for a couple days.

So as a Public Service Announcement to Tacomaworld:

SUPPORT YOUR VEHICLE ON MULTIPLE POINTS ON THE FRAME IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE UNDER IT!!

Hi Lifts are good on the trail to get your vehicle out of a sticky situation, but get a beefy floor jack for your home.

LOL. Naw, they remained unsoiled. I had been working diligently on the truck all day, and had actually skipped lunch...

lol. Yeah, I was hoping to get the job done in one day. After it happened, I was actually thinking that I'm gonna have to pull an mjp2 and just like...not work on it...anymore...at all...

It'll be an mjp2 project for the whole week, probably, since I have school and work and no time.

Oh well, it'll give me time to practice safer activities...like ride my motorcycle. lol.

When I bought my jack I bought jack stands right along with it.

Good to hear you're okay. Another good practice is to have someone check on you every 15 minutes while you're under your truck.

    Just in case.

Thanks for posting this, and guys, PAY ATTENTION to this one!! I work with a young girl whose boyfriend wouldn't answer the phone a few months ago, so she had her mom drive her over there. Sadly, he was working under the car with no jackstands and the jack tipped over, killing him instantly (one would hope, anyway).

Another big mistake is using ramps. They cannot take the pressure and could flatten out at any time with no warning.

the high lift is ok at home..it's all good if you can get it up on some good Jack stands. right?

damn glad you are ok. i dont eff around under the car, without jackstands. and i do the ritualistic "try to push the car over" move once its up to double check.

Yes, this is true to a degree. Hi-Lifts are still going to be inherently more dangerous than a floor jack. ALWAYS use a good pair of jack stands. I have an old pair of 6 ton stands I use just for the hell of it.
