I bought A 2017 Tacoma off road in inferno color, November of 2017. It now has 6,300 miles on it and I have only drove it on a gravel road once for maybe 6 miles total. I just recently noticed rock chips behind the rear door on both sides, and was curious if anyone else has had the paint chip this fast and easy from rocks on the highway, road grime and such? The truck has factory tires, factory rims, and factory mud flaps. No spacers or lift kit.

The picture I quoted looks like something else, not rock chips. You ever come out to find the rear seatbelt on the outside of the car? Or anything else? That sucks. Hopefully you can get it fixed easily.

Might want to check who's cleaning your truck, maybe vacuum hose dragging in the door jamb.

Toyota and other auto makers are using cheap paper thin paint just to get past the standard three year warranty period. It's all about bare minimum standards to just get past the warranty. Propping up Billionaire shareholders is every expensive.

Each new year they manage to make the sheet metal and paint thinner.

I’m the only one who cleans it, it has to be something with road grime and such. With the marks on the passenger side it is happening there also just not as fast

How often do you have people going in and out of the back seats, maybe kids dragging something out of the back?

    Where do you live?

Do they salt the roads there? Do they sand the roads there?

How many miles were on the truck when you bought it?

How / why / when did you first notice this?

Has your truck been to a dealer or anything else for service?

Can you give us the name of the six miles of gravel road the truck has been on?

Also, who installed the rack and vent visors?

I live in Gillette Wyoming, yes they sand the roads on corners and at stop signs during the winter. I’m not sure how much salt they use here but I’m sure they use some. I purchased the truck at 71 miles. I took It to the car wash and was washing it, and noticed it while washing it at around 5,800 miles. The truck was as the dealership at around 4,800 miles. The name of the road was four corners road, it’s a regular gravel road that goes to a buddy of mines house a few minutes out of Gillette, I took It on that road around 3,000 miles.
I installed The roof rack and visors myself also.

I think I saw mud flaps in one picture? The likelihood of rocks or road grit flying up and hitting this one spot and no other part of the truck are incredibly slim. I'm not saying that it is unlikely that front tires could fling rocks, but it is damn near impossible for them to fling enough rocks to cause that many chips in that small of an area, and not chip anything else. Given where you are, I'd say snow is plowed more than using salt/sand to deal with it, even if they are dumping around corners or at stops, it's not as bad as places that get *a little* snow, where they dump salt/sand all over hell instead of plowing when snow falls. There seem to be no coal power plants (probably all wind power there?) or factories west that would dump corrosive fallout.

    1. Is it possible this was there before you bought the truck and covered up with touch up paint? My thinking is that road grit / salt / sand / winter in general took the touch up paint off.

    2. Did you have the doors open to mount the rack? If you had rocks in the treads of your shoes and stepped in there, you can guess what would happen.

    3. Is it possible this happened at the dealer at 4800 miles, and was either covered with orange crayon, or just not noticed? Did they vacuum out the back seats / could you tell? Any records in the Toyota owners site?

Any other issues with paint or the truck? I don't think this is a paint quality issue, as it seems the problem is related more to the location on the truck. You might ask at the dealer if they've ever seen anything like this (don't go accusing), odds are if it happened there, it's happened to others. If this is the case, you probably won't know either way, but somebody may or may not get let go. Accusing goes nowhere.

In the end, I think you're probably stuck covering this with touch up paint and living with it. There are much better things to look at in your area than door sills. Sounds like (other than this issue) the truck is working out well.

I webt To the dealership on Saturday and the salesman that sold me the pickup said he has never seen it before. The service guy said he had not either but he was sure it was from rock chips, he took pictures and sent them to headquarters and I’m supposed to hear from him next week sometime.

I’m extremely sure that is it rock chips and the rocks must be just missing the mud flap in front. Other than those spots on the truck the paint has been doing well. And I dont Have any other complaints about the vehicle.

I have same color and same issue, i also purchased the extra paint and fab to ensure this didnt happen after 10 years, just over a year and my truck looks horrible. I took it to the original dealer and have only gotten the run around, waiting for Toyota Rep to contact me.......

Sorry to hear that! I set up an appointment to get the whole vehicle quality inspected to make sure I dont have front end issues or anything..
I did Notice that when I look At my truck from the rear, that the bed is actually further towards the drivers side. Aka - not centered on the truck like it should be. So I’m trying to use that as maybe they put the truck together incorrectly or something. Might be something to check on yours!

Can you elaborate on what you heard and where you heard this? Did they say when this would be fixed? I just got a 2018 BBP Tacoma two days ago and I've noticed dust or some kind of contaminate under the clear coat in a couple of spots. I've discussed having them just replace it with another comparably spec'd truck. Now I'm wondering if I should get a different color if that happens...

This was told to me by the manager of the dealership body shop as for elaboration, I've already posted what I was told, they did not go into any more detail. I don't know if Toyota fixed my problem on the BBP 18's or not but it sounds like you are experiencing something different.

I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma Blazing Blue pearl with the same problem (whiting out) as another user. I had to push the local dealers hard and they would not help me. I escalated it to the regional level and they rejected it. I finally called the 800 number and got a national rep from Denver to look at it. they repainted the hood and roof. It seems to be fine now and its been 3 months.
