That’s the point, if you stay busy you realize how much fluff you don’t need.

I spoke with neighbor about this about 3 weeks. He has S63, Bentayga, Tesla X in driveway. Garage has 356 and Aventador. He has 3 boys. 9-14 years old. We were talking bout allowance and summer jobs for his boys. He straight up looked at me, "my kids are going to Harvard and Yale, they won't be working at Mickey D or mowing lawns around here like some (insert race)." To which I was initially appalled, then I was looking around the neighborhood, and realized his family is the norm--no teenagers are working........around here

    Times a changing.....

I didn't get an 'allowance'. My dad gave me $2/day for the bus to get to/from school. Lived close enough, I just walked to school and pocketed the $2/day.

Wasn't allowed to get a job because school was the priority.

My parents are broke as a joke so I didn’t get squat from them, but I did get 400$ a month from my grandpa... but he’s a millionaire so I got lucky.

I'm surrounded by old money. I have realized in my life and I have been told stories from my parents/grandparents that it only takes 3 generations to ruin a fortune. If you don’t have skills/knowledge/work ethic. You can become the very people you look down on.

I occasionally got an allowance, family could always afford one but typically my parents didn't feel like we needed one, I got paid $20/day to go to work with dad when I was 8 (I was homeschooled, made it easy to do this type of stuff), I got paid to drive electric forklifts, plug them in, and help out at the port of San Diego, it was one of my favorite jobs.
When we did get an allowance it was usually about $5, if it had been several months between allowances we would sometimes get a $20, we were always expected to do stuff around the house no matter what.

    Edit: This was early 2000's

I grew up in the 60s-70s in Itasca, Illinois in our home with a half acre and an in-ground pool. I was charged with mowing that huge lawn that took a half day and maintaining the vegetable gardens as well as the hand-crank pool filter system. I was also in charge of keeping the two family cars clean and waxed. I worked my little ass off and I did actually enjoy hard work! My sister was charged with the indoor chores and keeping the Ph balance/chlorination/skimming etc. in the pool. My Dad had his own meat shop called a "locker shop". People would order sides of beef and he would cut them into steaks, roasts, slabs, grind etc. and freezer wrap all into bagged orders. I worked there every weekday after school and one Saturday a month starting at 11 years old 'till I turned 16 then I got my first job at a Bonanza steak restaurant. I got ZERO pay as allowance or for working at Dad's shop. This was life. My friends didn't do a fraction of what I did I remember that. Kids now? Forget it. Entitled as hell.

I pay my kid for his weekly spelling test.... a buck a word. Chores are free labor and set to increase here.

Mine has 12 I think possible, the rest of class has to do 20. He has a hard time with some dyslexia so reading and spelling are challenging for him. He needed the incentive.

my kids get paid per task that is assigned a value at that time. They can then negotiate for more, but it might get undercut by their brother
