I was being facetious. Kinda. As Jason pointed out, the benefits are a big draw to employment there. And the notion that it is monumentally difficult to fire losers who sit on their asses all day collecting a pay check. Not implying that either of you fit that description, though I'd wager you know many that do. And note that pensions are bankrupting municipalities, cities, and states, all over the country.

The State has FMLA, so that should not have effected you adversely.

Pentions aren't what is bankrupting it's the state mismanaging the funds that is bankrupting.

FMLA is federal, and it just means your employer can't fire you or discontinue benefits during a family leave. The State does have a paid family leave (PFL) benefit that is something and helpful paid through EDD, about 50% for a limited time. You have to exhaust all your PTO before using that. My wife an I needed to develop an intricate strategy just to have enough time off between us before our son was old enough to be eligible to be in day care. Which was still an alarmingly young age (4 months) for us to be comfortable. This country and culture has maternity/paternity all wrong now that pretty much both parents always have full-time jobs and extended families are dispersed across the country. I have a newfound respect for single mothers.

Guess it's probably both, then. Just a couple years ago several California Cities stopped pensions and all new hires were enrolled in a 401k type of plan. Not sure how many remain from that group. San Diego and San Jose were a couple that come to mind.

I am. Don't know much about LEAP other than it's for hiring people with mental or physical disabilities. Didn't know back pain qualified. I figured it was for people with real disabilities.

I know people that were hired through the program. Interesting group. You know, "short bus" types. I knew one woman that was hired at DOJ. She wasn't physically disabled, so I assumed it was based on her IQ.

Gents, just a subtle reminder about politically centered discussions. Would appreciate it if we keep the reports out of this thread.

That's what I tried telling my buddy. He insisted that my injury would qualify me, and the worker that I spoke with confirmed it. weird. Or maybe they have the inside scoop on me :tinfoilhat:

Back pain can be a lot of things. For example my gf has two herniated discs in her lower neck from getting rear-ended twice within a few months (2nd time she wasn't even driving) three years ago. Not going to get into more details of what it's been like for her, but I'd say it's absolutely a "real disability"

I've never met you but if you are printing a lot, I would think about clothing. May need to buy a larger shirt. I can carry a G19 (appendix) in shorts and a t-shirt. I'm 6'1" 200lbs

Some thing that helped me get over that is when you are out carrying or not look and actually see who is watching/looking at you. Yow will see that most don't have a clue. People are so busy with what they are doing or in a cell phone to not even care. Situational awareness for some is non-existent.
