What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Would like to avoid that if at all possible. Going to try and find a massive rivnut i can jam into those holes in the frame

Did you use a steering wheel puller kit or just yank on it till free?

 

This is exactly what I did, Rob. I didn’t trust the self-tappers at all.

I've never not been able to rock a steering wheel off. Grab at 3 and 9 then just wiggle loose.

 

Thanks! I've been eyeing local junk yards for is300, celica, rav4, Corolla steering wheels but I didn't want to get half way into taking it out just to realize I didn't bring enough tools.

 

I just rocked mine to get it off. You get extra points if you can find the rare IS300 with a manual too, no buttons on the wheel. I like it for the Taco, its a nice steering wheel to hold.

 

Is the airbag clock spring the same as the Tacoma's?

 

98-04 is the same as the IS300 one but 95-97 has different plugs. For the airbag though, the horn and cruise plug right in for 95-99. You could plug swap it I guess, just gotta make sure you have an ESD safe soldering iron or you'll be picking teeth up off your work bench. Probably safer to swap the plug on the truck side for the airbag by using a 98-04 clock spring or just solder the plug from the IS300 clockspring

 

I get sad everytime I think about how many manual is300's have salvage titles.

How did you mount the ultragauge?

 

I know, I love them too. Probably my most favorite car, would rather have one than a MKIV Supra. But clean ones are tough to find now, most of them have more rice than a sushi shop now. The UltraGauge is mounted with Velcro to it's little clip thing it comes with.

 

I was window shopping last night and found an automatic 03 with 100k miles and a clean title. Little dinged up but a solid freaking car at $4800

 

Not bad if it only has 100k, plus the auto is pretty competent in those.

I agree with the tranny skid tho. Don't like the self tapping screws

 

Nice, one day I'll be able to justify owning a car. Right now I can't get there, but one day dammit!

 

So...frame barely passed inspection. Plenty of rust, “cross members corroding, no perforation found”. Frame covered under extend warranty until 12.1.18...if only there was a way to speed up the rusting...

 

As far as power delivery goes, do you prefer the inline 6 or V6?

And what kind of mileage are you getting with the IS?

 

I have a larger I6 in my Cruiser and I will say because they have perfect primary balance it is insane how smooth it is. I can't compare much else because it is so much larger. But I love my I6
