Pedal Commander, What the heck is this? Is this for real?

Got a little bored and stumbled on this..I mean I don't want to chuckle too much, but what is this... gimmick? It sounds like an ECT all the time type of device...they blatanly say that a tune will not give you the performance this thing can..lol

It just makes the accelerator pedal respond more like it actually has a throttle cable. It addresses the failboat, lagtastic throttle-by-wire in the Taco.

The Sprint Booster is better, IMHO. You can set it and unplug the controller from the pedal unit.

Does it tamper with the ECU or code? It flashes only the throttle portion? This worries me a little...

 

Uh, there is a point where flying by wire is risky, remember the Prius buggy accelerator issue? You are messing with if you are willing to put this between your foot and your engine.

 

Good point...if it becomes corrupted, it can potentially send a signal at whatever level it wants even if the gas pedal isn’t pressed. Never thought about that before...ok I have to reconsider this. Thanks!

 

It only modifies the signal between the pedal and the ECU, so the ECU thinks the pedal has been pressed further down and quicker than it actually has. The pedal adapter stays in place, even if you remove the controller. No ECU flashing involved.

Should the unit become corrupted...somehow... and mash the throttle to the floor instantaneously, the corrective action is simply throw the truck in neutral. You’ll bounce off the rev limiter until you come to a safe stop and can safely kill the engine, but hey, that’s why we have rev limiters, right?

That said, I recently added one of these to my 2nd gen 6 spd and am pretty happy with it overall. I’m used to throttle cables and the pedal commander makes it feel more like a cable and less like a computer is controlling the engine.

I hope they tested it for RF interference - a freind of mine (real friend, not the one with a bag on his head) had a S10 that would accelerate while his cruise control was on whenever he keyed up his CB - it had a linear amp so it was like driving a microwave down the road with all sorts of stray RF going everywhere.

 

Those PC’s are just hot garbage. They don’t do anything. Save for a tune.

If it's not useful to you, I guess it is.

It's great for folks with a 2.7L and no OV Tune available, to address the slower than normal throttle-by-wire.

I spent $2K on different tunes when I was trying to get my 2015 Colorado to shift properly. Two of the tuners offered custom tuning, so I went back and forth
with them in an attempt to mitigate the poor shifting. None of them really helped as much as I thought they should have.

The device that ended up being most effective was the Pedal Commander. Especially when I combined it with one of the better tunes.

That said, the damn adaptive "learning" BS eventually overrode the Pedal Commander too. I started off happy with the City +1 setting, and ended up on City +3 before I traded the truck. Putting the PC in Sport mode would cause the rear end to break loose.

All it really does is compress the signal sent by the gas pedal, giving you more finite control. If you want the truck to downshift, you don't have to mash the gas pedal to the floor.

They are pretty popular devices, so buy one, try it, and if you don't like it, sell it.

 

It's for people who can't just put their foot down further.

 

With an actual throttle cable, you don't need to put your foot down much at all to hit redline, and that's the point. Acceleration is instantaneous in my 97 Civic with throttle cable. You hit redline half way down. I have never needed to "floor it" in that car.
