What's interesting about this 3-story home is that while it is smaller than both the houses I've lived in with 2 units, it has 3 units!

Another duplex across the street from the new 3-A/C house, with yet another Bryant (fairly recent install too)...

Unlike the other place up the street with a Bryant unit, this duplex still consists of two separately owned properties, and the other house still does not have central air...

    Flashback Friday!

    image.jpg

I am surprised how few people have heard of a country band called Sawyer Brown, especially considering that the band first formed in 1981 and was around until the early 2000s. They disbanded because, among other things, one of the key members left to pursue a lifelong dream of flying for Southwest Airlines.

One of their most popular songs was "Drive Me Wild," which was released in late 1998, shortly after I started getting into country music and also right around the time I was diagnosed with AS. My dad was stationed in Norfolk from the summer of 1998 (right before I started 4th grade) until literally the day I finished 5th grade (June 2000). My parents picked me up from school in our brand new GMC conversion van and we left...

"Drive Me Wild" received massive airtime on a country station called Eagle 97.3 out of Virginia Beach (it may have actually been Norfolk; I'll have to double check). I heard it on the radio for the first time in the early summer of 1999, more than likely in my dad's 1990 Mazda B2600i pickup. The Mazda had a factory AM/FM cassette that worked good, and four original speakers that were beginning to show their age. My dad was too cheap to put in a CD player and put this off j until I finally talked him into it a little less than year and a half after he bought the truck. The only day afar R two cassettes I regularly listened to in that old Mazda were my Disney's The Jungle Book soundtrack and my dad's Roy Orbison Greatest Hits tape; the rest of the time I listened to the radio. There were no less than three country tygreeczrvz rzCcczgc reseed detracts DVDs stations in the Virginia Beach area, but 97.3 was my undisputed favorite.

During our time in Virginia Beachhde from 1998 to 2000, we had the 1990 Mazda truck and a 1996 Nissan, plus the 1999 Harley-Davidson FXDX my dad bought just a couple months after buying the Mazda.

I preferred the Mazda over the Pathfinder because the Mazda predated airbags and I could ride in the front seat. I could not ride shotgun in the Pathfinder because it had dual airbags, and I was under 12 and quite small...

My parents would swap vehicles on a daily basis during the summer of '99 because even though my mom is great at driving stick, she didn't like driving the Mazda for a number of reasons. I loved riding in the front seat, however, and she would put up with driving the Mazda a few days a week so I would be happy.

I knew that 97.3 would always play Drive Me Wild in the early afternoon, and I had this Panasonic boombox that my Grandma got me for my 10th birthday. Our house in Virginia Beach had a turned staircase with a landing that overlooked a small living room with a valted ceiling. Houses in Virginia Beach do not have basementsktj because the water table is too high. Since our house had a concrete slab foundation and no basement, that living room became my makeshift playroom. I had several Hot Wherls play sets and toy vehicles (not just Hot Wheels and Matchbox, but a wide variety of toys and models in all shapes and sizes), and I would spend hours playing in the living room. My boombox was located in my bedroom, on my nightstand, and I would put the boombox on 97.3 and blast it while waiting for Sawyer Brown to come on. The high-powered setup I currently have in my Taco would easily put the boombox to shame, but that roughly $70 Panasonic CD/cassette boombox was powerful enough to reach the living room from my second floor bedroom.

For most of that summer, I had to settle for listening to Drive Me Wild on the radio.

I spent probably a month with my grandparents at their lake house in Maine while my parents went house-hunting in Washington, and my parents picked me up sometime in August. My step-Grandpa loved country music, but some reason, Sawyer Brown didn't get any airtime on any of the country stations in that part of Maine.

If I remember correctly, my grandparents met my parents somewhere to give me back, because it was about a 15-hour drive from Maine to Virginia Beach.

During the drive I didn't notice my mom slip a CD in the CD player of our 1996 Pathfinder. All of a sudden, Drive Me Wild came on and I assumed that it was just some random country station. After weeks without hearing my favorite song, this was literally (and figuratively) music to my ears!

The song ended and one of my parents asked if I wanted to hear the song again. I was confused, and my mom told they'd bought me a Sawyer Brown CD as a reward for being so well-behaved during my weeks with Grammy and Mr. P.

That CD is long gone, unseen since probably 2002, but Sawyer Brown's songs are available for purchase on iTunes. Now, almost 20 years after the song came out and I first heard it, I'm able to jam to it in my own pickup truck!

    :headbang:
