I know, they're crazy awesome! I edited my post and added a third pic.

The 4R is on 39", the white AC is on 41", and the silver DC is on 42"

There wasn't much going on and it was pretty quite. Did have a fair amount of ppl hanging out. Rained off and on. They had a simple and very good burger and hotdog dinner. Thank you for offering non-Pork choices unlike the stupid FJ Summit event!!! >_<

There were rigs parked all around. Some heading out for late day trail runs while others were returning. I'm looking forward to checking out and sharing pics from some wheeling finally tomorrow!!

    IMG_3244.jpg

I just hung out and chatted with ppl and then headed to my hotel to do some marketing work on our website. Gonna call it a day and hit the sack. It's almost midnight here. Looking forward to meeting a lot of awesome Toyota owners soon!

Just fine. The trans doesn't see any more stress based on what's downstream. If anything, you're taking stress off the trans.

While SubCultureNM is correct, the problem the driver will have is that it would literally be impossible to stop the truck with the drivetrain loaded where you can't shift into neutral.

Consider how a torque converter is designed to stall when the torque load of its output exceeds the torque load of its input. In operation, there exists, depending on ATF temperature, about a 2:1 to 2.5:1 ratio of input torque vs output torque when the ECU has not electronically locked the torque converter, ie. while idling, but for the sake of illustration let's assume it's a 1:1 stall ratio.

To simply state stall, if the engine is outputting 10 lb-ft of torque and the input to the transmission requires 10 lb-ft of torque to rotate it (because it's connected to your tires and maybe they are 1 foot sunk in mud, then nothing happens. The system is in a static equilibrium and has "stalled". To "unstall" you simply increase torque input by giving it some more skinny pedal. ;)

    Now consider the following examples.

    1) Imagine what would happen if you were stopped on an up hill slope at a red light towing a small trailer. Imagine that the conditions were just right that while in Drive you could let off the brakes and the truck would not move forward or reward. It would just sit there stalling with gravity.

    2) Image what would happen if you were in Drive and 4WD high range and let the truck idle forward on it's own with good traction and into a giant sequoia tree. Without pressing the brakes the truck would bump into the tree and simply come to a stop ("stall") despite the engine still idling.

    3) Finally, imagine what happens when you're in Drive approaching a red light and press the brakes to slow down to a complete stop. This is also stall. Torque converters are stalling every day of their life.

In all three scenarios the Torque Converter is simply doing it's job, spinning around getting dizzy with no clue what's going on in the outside world. It sees a load at the transmission that is higher than the torque input from the engine, so it stalls and nothing moves.

Now let's see what happens when we shift into low range. Suddenly, according to the torque converter, the perceived drive train load has reduced by 2.57:1 (the t/case low range gear ratio). This means that in scenario #1 you'd need a trailer with a rolling resistance 2.57-times higher for the truck to sit stationary on the slope. It also means that in scenario #3 we need a brake-force 2.57-times greater to bring the truck to a stop and keep it stopped.

Now, with a Marlin Crawler TacoBox Supreme, which is a 4.70:1 ratio added in front of the 2.57:1 t/case for a compound ratio of 12.08:1, the driver has to hit the brakes 12 times harder than stock to stop the vehicle. This isn't so bad. You just gotta press the pedal firmly. Also, this ratio in an auto is mostly used for showing off; Most of the time you'd only have the TacoBox in low (4.70) and the t/case in high (1:1). In fact, this is even how I drive my Tacoma 90% of the time. I only need that extra double-low gearing when I'm really in trouble or need the maximum control otherwise impossible without a Marlin Crawler. But to have that option... To have that extra gear lever at your disposal at all times. That sense of security is PRICELESS to those who have it!!

But now, with Triples and an auto, should you decide to engage all three low ranges, you'd have a 27.54:1 total t/case ratio meaning you must hit the brakes nearly 28 times harder to bring the truck to a stop. While I've never seen this done, I am most certain this would be entirely impossible as I can demonstrate this simply in my Tacoma: Shift it into Triple Low and step on the brake pedal with BOTH feet while simultaneously pulling into the steering wheel with my upper body at my full might and the engine doesn't even deflect from it's idle RPM speed. Of course for me I can just engage the clutch pedal and come to a stop, but under a load it might not be so easy with an auto.

To explain and someday I will do the math for this, let's assume that at 800 RPM idle the engine is developing 10 lb-ft torque without any throttle, just the torque from the ECU maintaining idle speed and the inertia from all spinning objects such as a 35-lb flywheel + pressure plate (or in the case of an auto the flex plate + torque converter). Now, multiply 10 lb-ft by my Crawl Ratio of 580. Not including parasitic losses, there is 5,800 lb-ft of torque............and we haven't even touched the gas pedal. There is no way in hell my brakes are going to stop 6K lb-ft of torque. This is around two to three times more torque output than a modern 18-wheeler Big Rig's 15-liter turbo diesel engine at full throttle and boost.... and yet my engine is still just quietly idling. Now..... for an automatic.... we need to add in the 2:1 ~ 2.5:1 multiplication from the torque converter and................ you'll have to turn the ignition off in order to stop the truck :D

I hope this doesn't scare anyone. If there is no load on the auto then you can just simply shift into Neutral using your pinky finger even in Dual Marlin Crawler Low Range as if the truck was coasting to a red light. No big deal. The above is just an extreme scenario and is why we've never had a customer try it haha We are open to anyone who'd like to be the first :D

    Regards,
    BigMike

Good morning from Gilmer, TX everyone!

Sorry for the lack of updates yesterday. Running a vendor booth at this large of an event was a lot of work for one guy and I never got a chance to post up! I don't have much time right now but wanted to get some updates to the thread :D

Over the years I've really disliked how Toyota keeps making the 4R larger, and larger, and larger, and when I was standing here I was thinking..... holy smokes this Tacoma is way too big. We need a small, simple, compact Mini-truck again Toyota!! >_<
