That's no problem, I'll plan on bringing some drinks and what not. I will more than likely be there even if she doesn't want to go. I just have to make sure I won't get scheduled to work.

    Hey guys,

I'm in the Lejeune/Jacksonville area and looking for someone who can do driveshaft repair. I have a new double cardan joint I need cut/welded onto my driveshaft & then rebalanced.

    Any suggestions?

there is a place in Goldsboro I've heard about, supposed to be good, know nothing of their work. I've had a hell of a time getting a straight one in Raleigh area, others experiences may differ.

    Metalcraft & Mechanical Co.

I've already called them & they pissed me off. I told the guy I had a double cardan I needed rebuilt & cut/welded onto a Tacoma 2 piece driveshaft. I've already purchased a donor double cardan from a salvage yard & the correct u-joints & CV ball kit from Rockford/Neapco. I just need someone who to rebuild it, put it on my driveshaft & then rebalance it.

He said there are no parts available to rebuild a Toyota double cardan & I had parts mixed up & what they do is build new driveshafts for customers using Spicer parts & lifetime warranty & he could build me one for $700-800.

I tried to explain to him that the double cardan can in fact be rebuilt & he started off again about me being wrong & offering to build a new driveshaft again so I just hung up.

Oliver's in Winston Salem & Carolina Driveline in Spartanburg are both very good from what I've been told but they are both far away from me. At that point I'd assume just buying a one piece from Tom Woods & having it delivered to my house.

Regardless, I need to figure out something soon. My truck is essentially FWD & useless for anything other than a quick trip to the store.

Incorrect. Several of us have driven 8 hrs home after breaking driveshafts and ring/pinion and then commute back and forth to work. It's not ideal but it's far from useless.

$700+ for a Spicer component shaft is ridiculous. (EDIT -I guess that’s the going rate, but it better have a warranty)

I finally bought a NEW stock replacement from wholesaleimportparts.com after numerous attempts and never being able to get one straight.
This was for my ‘97 4Runner, has Double Cardan on the trans end. I have video where you could, watch the tube hop on the CV end of the shaft.

The one I got from Import Parts is infact made from Spicer parts, and my Runner has been damn near glass smooth since. But it is only a stock replacement. Though it looks stronger then the stock spare I have.

As for the RockFord/Neapco parts, yes they work, I’ve used those to build my spare, the problem is the cups are a few thousands smaller than the yoke bores, the cups spin in the yoke after assembly.
It works fine, but there is a slight vibe @65 that’s unsettling. I used it for awhile, just made me nervious, especially towing my camper.

I bought another rear shaft from a salvage yard and had it rebuilt by Olivers, had a slight vibe when I got it back, the tube was dented slightly and that may have been the cause. It lasted 2 yeas before it spit a cap out of the CV, then had the shaft rebuilt by Fleet Pride.....5 times and there was always something not right, twice it spit caps within 2 miles of install. They forgot to install the internal clips. The last time I just dealt with the vibe @60 until it got worse. And then finally ordered the new one. 2years now and it’s been non issue.
