We give our 5 year old 3 dollars a week to put his socks in the hamper, put his dishes in the sink, and various other small "chores". He uses it mostly to buy legos. Lol

My parents used the $5 forced saving model - I would get $5 a week as long as I behaved for my grandparents and did chores around the house when asked - any severe infractions or violations would result in no allowance for weeks. If I spent any of it, I wouldn't get any of that change for that week - so a $3 blockbuster game rental actually was $5 to me (rightfully so since obviously there are sales taxes, and also my dad's time to return it on Monday). I eventually got it. My parents could have, but didn't factor in clothing or that 2nd pair of sneakers in the middle of the school year though...

I've heard of the itemized spreadsheet chore model - seems interesting, but smart kids will figure out how to avoid doing tasks they don't like such as taking out the garbage, and then repeat easy-to-do tasks like washing the dishes over and over and over to drive up their allowance.

I'll probably use the good grades & basic chores system on my daughter, and induce an artificial scarcity model (you might be able to afford it, but should your really be buying it in the big picture) as well as warehousing model where she'll only be allowed to have X amount of stuff before we start saying No because there is no shelf or floor space. She'll need to figure out how to get rid of that stuff herself, or she otherwise can't acquire anything new, and she'll need to pay for inventory space if she does acquire new stuff.

$20 per week, with special rules and conditions and task work built-in, is probably the new reasonable allowance for middle class and upper middle class.

At least you were making money to buy clothes all my shit were hand-me-downs from family and friends sometimes had holes and stains in it not to mention the bowl cut that I rocked year round lol.

It sounds like work ethic, and being raised to have gratitude for even the smallest things is best in life no matter how messed up it seems. And we learn from those mistakes and try not to do the same.

I used to get $5 a week until I was probably 11. After that, I got paid to pick up the dog shit. $1/lb we had a big dog so it was 10-12 bucks a week. Got a job when I was 15, worked year round as a lifeguard.
