So good it locks the brakes...

anyways, the whole disc brake vs drum brake has been debated to death.

My experience, I notice no discernible braking performance improvement with 4 wheel discs vs disc and drums. At the end of the day the only empirical fact we have about them, is disc brakes dissipate heat better than drums which is why discs became popular.

Having drum brakes in the back is like those walmart bikes that have V-brakes in the back and discs in the front to make it look premium.

    I don't care.

I've had 5 trucks in 30+ years, all with discs up front and drums in the back. I've replaced plenty of front pads and rotors over the years, never had an issue with the rear drums or felt I didn't have enough brakes for my uses in any of them.

You want a Toyota truck with discs front and back buy a Tundra.

I’ll wait till Toyota makes the Tundra more competitive before considering buying one.

Can someone please explain to me why tractor-trailer and big rigs and trucks over 18,000 lb still have drum brakes at all the wheels? Maybe I'm missing something here. A drum brake is a way more efficient system

It comes down to $$ as everything does. The discs are proven to work better and in Europe they have more stringent regulations so they are required to use them. Here it's about saving money and going with the cheaper system.

There is a post (or several) here recently that outlined the advantages to drum brakes, somewhat along the same lines as your post. I looked for the post(s) but can't seem to find it. I'm fine with drums on the back.

I am too, especially on a pickup that has a lighter ass. My truck stops in the same distance as the trucks that have discs all around. Drums are much more robust and can stand more abuse, but still need to be maintained lol.

Yes the drums work but they aren't a better system than disc brakes that's not even an argument.

All of the Engines that I rode in were Drum brakes on the back, with dual caliper disc up front, and we never had a problem stopping a 55,000 plus pound Engine.

I agree. Chalk it up to different strokes for different folks.

My Tacoma is the first truck I've ever owned. Purchased in December 2017. Before I bought it, I lurked here for a few months, educating myself and getting smart on the 3rd Gen vs the Colorado/Canyon. I never really understood why some members here are/were were annoyed with rear drums. Usually it was something along this lines of "but this is 2018! Technology has advanced and our trucks should have 4 wheel disc brakes, get 23MPGs on lifted 35's and be powered by unicorn farts". Maybe the last part is a stretch, but it's questionable anymore.

Whatever...still love this place though. :crapstorm:

Most of those people who complain about having drum brakes were probably happy with the braking of the Truck until they found out they had drums.

Long lasting and more reliable and robust. Thats the truth. Are they cheaper? Probably not. I would say in the quantities Toyota buys for Tacomas (40K a month) that disc and drum would be a wash.
Unless you just really try, you can't mess up a drum brake.
The big drawback of a drum brake is they are not as proportional as a disc brake. If you drove a vehicle with drums on front and rear you would quickly realize this. Its like you step on the brake, hard or easy, and you get the same braking force. Disc brakes have a much better feel.
But, on a truck because of the front to rear weight differential, drums are just fine for th rear. There you go.
