Today my rearview mirror fell off and took a chunk of glass from the windshield with it. I didn't get a picture of the windshield because it was dark but here is the chunk still attached to the mount. Any recommendations for fixes?

I think a new windshield is the only fix.

As long as there isn't a crack radiating out from the chip, I would buy a new shoe (or whatever they call it) and glue it on higher up on the windshield where Toyota should have put it.

You probably shouldn't tell them you put a mirror riser on there 2 hours earlier.

Just scheduled a service for Monday with Safelite. I've got $0 deductible under glass replacement on my policy with USAA so I should be alright. Maybe I'll just have the technician glue the the mirror attaches to higher up on the windshield. We will see when I go in. Anyone have any experience with Safelite and USAA?

I've dealt with Safelite quite a bit, I don't think they're gonna be willing to glue it back in. They won't even repair a rock chip if its in the drivers line of sight and instead will replace the whole windshield.

If it were me I'd go for the full replacement, the glass integrity is severely diminished with a chunk like that out of the windshield.

Did you get a picture of the missing chunk? That's crazy that your glass did that.

Safelite likely gets the windshield from its supplier with the bracket already installed, so I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

Was the mirror it bent or stressed? I’ve never seen it pull the glass out like that. Crazy.

Oh I meant to mention that I did opt for full windshield replacement and they are covering at no charge. It was the riser I put on there. The spot may have already been weak and the added weight put too much force on that spot. I'm going to put adhesive on the actual riser to take some of the weight when I install it again.

Your new Safelite will most likely be made in China. That doesn't make it bad, just not OEM.

I don't mind. I see some people freak out about it but if it works then I'm happy.

so. this happened to me twice. the most recent occurrence was last week. after i had my windshield replaced. the birddog mirros riser is dog shit. i hate to trash a product, but if you have the technology package on you truck, or even most mirrors on any current vehicle, this is a piss poor idea the weight of the mirror at an elevated height caused pressure at a higher angle causing the button to break off. so while the tech deck is a great product. hell to the no on the mirror riser. i think bird dog should start refunding people on these risers, as well as reimbursing for windshields.

as for safelight or any glass company gluing or filling that, aint gonna happen. most won't bother, and the ones that do won't guarantee the work. youre gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a new windshield.

Luckily my insurance is replacing the entire windshield at no charge to me. I noticed only the original set screw is what's holding all the weight of the mirror and made me uneasy. I feel a little better that I'm not the only one. Now I'm not sure whether to put it on and epoxy the top portion or just scrap it all together.
