What you running the ISO at?

 

This was 1/8000 shutter speed with auto ISO. It was terrible. I thought I had changed it but I was wrong. Taken some here at the house at 1/400-650 speed and 4-800 iso. Much better

 

Better? Minus the compression TW is doing to it. And your focus point is on the umbrella instead of the bike.

 

I was trying for the umbrella actually lol.

400 would have been plenty if not too much still. I normally shoot at 100-200 ISO in daylight. Dump the auto ISO and auto focus point. Use single focus and you can move it around with the D pad on the back of the camera. Other option is put the single focus point on your subject, half press and hold then compose photo and press the rest of the way down to take the photo. On a crop frame you won't be able to get as much of the background out of focus to highlight the subject as you can on a full frame. Plus your lenses don't go wide enough for it yet.

 

But your subject in that photo is the bike.

I mix it up. Sometimes it's buildings and then I blur the bike.

 

You can also meter off the focus point instead of the whole photo. That will help with the exposure especially with people.

 

To focus on a subject and expose for it do I like I said for the focus point. Then While half pressing and have the focus locked hit the AF-L/AE-L button and hold on the back also. Recompose and snap the photo.

You shooting in just P or are you shooting in A so you select the aperture?

On mine I use center-weighted metering for the exposure because I want my subject to be the point of the metering. Which is what my focus point is locked on.

With Shutter Priority (S) you'll want to use that more when you need to keep the shutter speed higher to stop motion in something. Or when you want a slightly longer exposure in lower light -(Which it's not really going to do well at). You could have taken that in Aperture Priority (A) and used f/8 and the wall and bike would have been in focus.

If I remember right this is your first DSLR, right? You've been using a phone camera before?
