We spent last week up in the Reno area and loved the fact that there was no traffic, even at "rush hour"! Probably heading back up in a couple weeks.

My buddy is a tree trimmer and has a standing tractor. 3ft wide bucket, hydraulic accessories, he recently upgraded from a wheeled versionto tracks and it works amazing. I've seen them go cheaper than bobcats.

    @Speed Freek
Hi Jason, So cool you can build trails now with your new tractor! LOL
    I have a shop question:
My AC is very weak (not cold anymore) unless I am at speed. As soon as I stop for traffic light or waiting for gas at Costco, the air is not cold and dry as it normally would be.
My Tacoma is a 2010 with 112,000 miles... Does it sound like time for a recharge of coolant? I used to do my own back in the 70s and 80s when we had freon kits. I am guessing for 2009+ they have something different and more difficult?? Is there a can I can buy (what?) and do you do that?
I also should get an oil change as it has been over a year since you last changed my synthetic motor oil (maybe 10,000 miles ago).
    Thank you!
PS My rear brakes are still working well since you welded the shoe mount back to the wheel plate! I have not been back to Baja since that trip, but my road guide and maps are completed (but not published).

You can do it yourself but it almost sounds like your fan clutch is going out.

Hey David! Yeah pretty stoked, got it delivered this morning!
So it could be a few things, one way to check your clutch fan to verify that its not that causing the issue is to see if it feels pretty stiff once the truck is at operating temperature and in a warm environment. If its not then the fan clutch can be bad (if thats the case get an OE one the aftermarket ones are junk)
However it could also be that you just need a recharge, the newer R-134 is crap compared to R-12!!

Shoot me a text and we can see if topping off the system will get it going again, cheap and easy to do...I can also verify the pressure in the system.

BTW great job on the Missions guide, thats simply badass!

I'm experiencing power loss while offroading sometimes..

Background: I'm on 40" tires, supercharged, regeared to 4.88s, and have a rear air locker on my Tundra.

This happens maybe 5% of the time I'm on a technical rock crawling trail but the truck completely gives up as far as momentum goes. The engine runs but I can floor the pedal and get no RPMs going. It typically happens when I've stopped on some rocks and there's a giant boulder or two behind (or in front) of one or two of the wheels and I'm going uphill (either forward or in reverse). I'm talking boulders that are over half the height of my 40" tires. Even with the rear air locker the truck wouldn't budge.

We disconnected the battery for a few minutes last night on our trail run and I think it fixed it but I'm not sure since there wasn't too many hard obstacles left to get hung up on; doing this resets the computer's learning of your driving habits and other knowledge.

I have experienced this in my tacoma a few times. I didn't think it was a issue and it might be a characteristic of this new model. Since I have no real off road experience to speak of before owning this truck. I am interested to hear what the outcome is on your rig.

any check engine lights or is the traction system kicking on? i know sometimes the computer cuts throttle when both the brakes and gas are used at the sametime

Just thought of something.. stupid of me.. and I'm normally in a very good habit of doing so.. but I probably forgot to completely turn off traction control (by holding down the button for 3 seconds) after starting my engine in 4-low; not saying this is the reason why but it could very well be.

The traction system, when it kicks in, cuts off the throttle, completely?

Also.. here's exactly where it died last night. This is a video from the perspective of the YJ that was following me (ie. you'll see my truck in front of him) and the first part of the video shows where I got stuck; I ended up winching out a bit since I had no revs backward or foward. It's a completely off-camber spot while going uphill and barely wide enough for Jeeps so I was riding the rocks and at one point when my revs vanished my passenger side was half an inch from the rock face on the right -- I did tape my passenger rear door a bit down to the metal (ie. not a dent but the paint got eff'd).

His video doesn't really show the fact that as I got out of that first part I actually made the obstacle easier by breaking down some of the rocks.
