If you dont have a surface plate and gauge blocks you'll need a 3-4in mic. The good stuff is starrett, mitutoyo, or brown and sharpe(tesa). Spi is a cheaper alternative though. Cruise Ebay and craigslist for deals.

    Make sure its .0001 gradations.

I need clarification on machine shop process, first for me.

    My Build
    Forged pistons/rods
    Stainless valves
    Viton valve seals
    Paint engine block

    My Plan
DIY hot tank, Magnaflux and paint then send to machine shop for bore and resurface. What would they charge me for, are there any "hidden charges"? What's a fair price, too much?
The head is getting new ss valves; all I need to do is DIY lap those, right? No machine work other than resurface?

    Hot Tank
Block- Potassium or Sodium hydroxide (lye) @ 1lb/5gal water
Head- Simple Green Pro HD (nearly same Extreme Aircraft and Precision Cleaner) @ 1/3 water

    Magnaflux
    01-5750-77 Cleaner
    01-5155-77 Penetrant
    01-5352-77 Developer

Do you know if this is a viable alternative:
    CRC
    03108 Cleaner
    03106 Penetrant
    03107 Developer

Out of curiosity why ss valves?

Rust isn't an issue and a good 4140 or similar is stronger especially under heat situations.

Because it's all I can find lol
    Is it lighter or heavier?
Where can I find 4140 valves for 2TR?

I dont think the weight will be crazy different, but unless you're trying to rev to some crazy level it shouldn't be an issue. 4140, 4340, 4130 anything like that.

I didn't see much around for valve options. If you have the size you can probably order them custom.

I'd seriously consider getting hardened seats if you run those SS valves.. Ive seen those stock valves do just fine up through 350hp(their dyno said higher, but I dont believe it completely lol dont know when it was last calibrated)

I had a guy tell me $1000 on Thursday to Magnaflux, soda blast and install seats. I'm not paying that. I don't think I'm going to be over 350 honestly

    What about just for seats?

Why magnaflux? You have something on the block that concerns you?

I gotta call him back with more specific questions. That shop has a great reputation, I want to use him but not getting ripped off. Maybe he made a few assumptions, like he had to dis/assemble stuff too idk.
I have to call other shops too; my mission Monday will be to have a shop decided on.

No, but I think it's necessary before I build this engine up, am I crazy?

Not completely, but if its and extra hour or two of time, it will add to that total

I was quoted ~$120 each piece for Magnaflux, that's why I found the part numbers above to do myself. The CRC only totaled ~$35 and is enough to do both

Get the seats done, and DIY the rest. You got this

Lce told me my head needs new seats if I plan to rev out past factory rev limit. I’m just going to torture the stock block.

You have to keep in mind my use- I want to come to rpm quicker, not higher. I’ve never even seen 3500 rpm in this truck lol
    I just don’t think it’s for me.
