Toyota Mechanics in Tacoma World

I was just wondering if there are any Toyota mechanics out there in Tacoma World.It sure would be nice to talk to one to get some advice on my 2018 Tacoma SR5.

 

There are a bunch of mechanics here. There are also a bunch of us engineers too. What's your problem?

I have had my 2018 Tacoma for about 3 weeks now. I go out in morning 6am in garage overnight low about +2 start the truck it is warming up at 1000-1100 rpm let it run about 5-10 minutes warm up.The temperature gauge needle reaches about the 10 oclock position and I know fully warmed up it would be at the 12 oclock position. So the problem is that the engine is half warmed up and still at 900-1000 rpm.I put it into reverse and it drops down to 500-600 rpm. I let my foot off of the brake and it wants to give a very slight lunge. So now I'm in the alley and shift it in to drive and I hear a faint click or snap noise coming from the rear somewhere possibly differential.Is this thing possibly overcharging and taking so long for the rpm's to kick down? It does not make the faint click or snap noise after the engine is fully warmed up.I just can't believe it takes the engine so long to kick down. I know sweet f k all about these vehicles now a days.I miss my 60s vehicles with carbs and you could do almost everything yourself.

 

Also would I risk damaging something if it only had a 2-3 minute warm up and I had to go. Shit I would start my hemi in the garage in the winter and after 2-3 minutes warm up put it in gear and back out and no click or snap noise from rear. But I love this Tacoma the nicest truck I have owned looks and everything. Way nicer than my hemi.I think the Tacoma's are the nicest trucks on the streets right now.I know I might sound like an amateur idiot but I'm stressed with a new truck I would hate for something to go wrong.

 

Modern motors don't need to warm up like the old days. I never let mine warm up for longer than a minute and have taken my last 3 trucks over 200K miles with no major mechanical issues.

 

I'm a Lexus tech apprentice does that count?

 

What are your rpm's showing on tach when you put it in to gear with 1 minute warm up? Also do you hear a slight click or snap noise from somewhere in the rear when you put it in to gear?

No worries.
This truck is much more efficient that the '60's vehicles or even your hemi. What that means is it does not make near as much heat, as heat is is basically wasted energy when it comes to your engine. So much so that your truck has an electric heater that engages on a cold start.
As far as damage, your

$52 0W-20 oil Toyota/ exxon mobil Case of 6 Quarts Full Synthetic TGMO SN 0W-20 Oil

0W-20 oil maintains a good viscosity from way below zero (F) to way above 100 (F) so no worries on damage or cold start or driving.
Of course everything else is cold too, like tires, brakes, diffs, etc so it takes a bit of driving to warm those up.
It was below zero several times this year where I live and I noticed that when warming up the truck, it would only get luke warm until driving, then the heat would get really hot.

Good luck and I wouldn't worry a bit. RPM fluctuation is more driven by fuel/air mix until it gets warm enough to keep the correct S ratio. Think a fancy way to choke your engine until it gets warm lol.

If it does not do it when the vehicle is warm I wouldn't worry. Cold parts make strange noises. As far as identifying the noise:
If you back up, stop, put it into drive and that where you hear the noise, then it is probably your brake caliper rattling a bit.
Or, if it's a clunk when cold that happens when you put it into any gear, drive or reverse, then that is probably a bit of axle wrap where the angle of the driveline is sluggish to change because its cold lol.
Either noise is no biggie, especially if when warm it goes away.

 

All the noises you hear are normal.. mine clicks, knocks, clanks and a few other noises. I got 24k on her and it's runs just fine. Just a lot of quirks with these new trucks.

no problem. Just enjoy the truck when the noises get to loud.... Just turn up the radio. You may need the kicker speaker upgrade... oh and turning the a/c fan on high, it sounds almost like driving with both front windows down from the wind noise. Lol

So is everyone saying that you don't need to warm this engine up when it's cold?

 

Summer a few minutes and winter longer. Do you find that yours takes a long time to kick down to 500 rpm?

 

In the winter even with the block heater plugged in I always give the vehicle a 10 min. warm up.
