I have an Agreed Value Policy on my car and to be honest the only time they asked for mileage was when I originally signed up, I do stay under my 7500 limit though.

I have farmers, they only ask when you’re adding a new vehicle, and only find out if you’re in an accident where insurance companies get involved. Other than that, never. I know dealers can find out on leases because part of lexus app I once had to use my smartphone to start the engine or lock/unlock stated in the disclaimer terms you have to accept to use the app that data about your vehicle will be sent to lexus. As far as insurance, I did not know carfax tracks maintenance too, non of my service places (non toyota) care to document or report it.

The only time they could find out is when you smog, it gets recorded to the dmv records which insurance does have access to. Have you had to smog yet?

Is this a US thing? Im Vancouver Canada, and I'm just insured based on if I drive the vehicle to work, or if i use it for pleasure only (max 6 times to work per month)

When you take your vehicle in for service and inspections you VIN is either scanned or typed into a computer for monitoring purposes...If anything is on a computer connected to the internet it is the world’s to see..

They (State) only ask for information that “requires your consent” regarding registration because your are the equitable title holder to the property and the person responsible for the liability.

You only work once a week in Canada? I hope you meant 6 times a week max...or else pick me up at the airport, I’m making the move!

lol I take public transit in for work.

When you have insurance for pleasure use, you are only supposed to drive to work 6 times a month max.

If you insure it to be used to drive in for work then there is no limit

When you register property with the state the title is split...you get the equity rights to the vehicle and all the liability to go with it and the government gets ownership. Equity is the money (value of the property) and the liability is any fees associated with being the “registered owner” of said vehicle. Ownership in regards to motor vehicle is just an illusion created by clever marketing because who would buy a vehicle that they don’t own? I can’t find a definition for certificate of title in the vehicle code for my state...As far as I know a certificate of title is proof the vehicle was confiscated at the point of sale...

It’s more like a promissory note. You own it as long as you make payments. You’re still on the title because you’ve put money into the down, or first payment at time of purchase, so you’re a shareholder. Like a mortgage on a home, bank only owns it when you default. Hence foreclosure or repo in terms of a car. It’s not like an apartment tenant. It’s in the middle. You’re not renting per se, because you still take care of your home on your own dime because like a car, you’re still allowed to resell it at anytime and pay off the balance. A renter/tenant or leasee can’t resell something that’s not theirs, they aren’t on any titles. They’re only under contract, just like a lease. Can’t make modifications without approval or in terms of a car, you have to return back to stock and take mods off when lease is done. However, with a vehicle lease, you can sell it to clear the payoff balance. As long as you make payments, you own it. I think his wording was off.

The term is “assumed ownership”, they assume you will pay for it in full eventually.

Good explanation. Few people understand secured debt that well.

I think he is talking about the old property tax argument, which I see frequently with houses. “You don’t own it because if you don’t pay your property taxes the government will take it from you.” Which is not the same with vehicles, at least in my state. If you don’t pay registration fees on a vehicle they don’t take it from you, you just can’t drive it on a public road.

As far as property taxes go, you can either have your property taxes or you can have a local income tax or both. Personally I prefer the property tax.

I work in the Underwriting department of a major insurance company. The mileage information being used by your insurance company is coming from Carfax. That's one of many reasons I change my own oil
