Today when one of my employees found out my truck is 2WD he literally laughed out loud (and then swiftly apologized). It appeared to be instinct. As if you found out a dude was wearing frilly pink girl panties.

Clearly a PreRunner isn't as good as a 4x4, but is it really laughable? This is really bothering me...does the general public laugh at PreRunners?

FWIW, this kid drives an early 80s Chevy C/K.

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
The general public doesn't know the difference between AWD, 4WD, lockers, LSD, etc, much less the configuration of a truck.

Who cares? PreRunners are awesome. If you don't need 4wd, then there is nothing wrong with getting a PreRunner.

I laughed at a prerunner today but it was due to the fact that the guy had a fabtech 6'' with a 3'' body lift running 35 inch boggers, Its wasnt even a TRD offroad!!!

Wow, a bunch of responses in no time. :)

I guess I am freaking because I have this vision in my head of people laughing at my truck behind my back. Ideally I wold like the public to be indifferent to it...not laugh at it.

honestly I do occasionally laugh at the idea of a prerunner because they seem like wannabes.
if you want a tough looking truck why not 4x4? I'm growing up though and laughing less every day.
when I was shopping for a dc 4x4, everything I looked at was a damn prerunner.

It would be laughable here, but there's snow on the ground half the year so 4WD is pretty much mandatory if you like to get around.

    Meh.

Half of the 4x4s around here all have drop bracket lifts with massive chrome wheels and rubber bands for tires, along with a nice set of truck nuts and rebel flag bumper sticker, license plate, or both. I'd take my truck on any trail those fools would go on.

Oh thats right, they don't ride actual trails. There idea of off roading is looking for some local construction trails to go mudding on after it rains, and then destroying the area with their 40" tires and leaving a sea of beer bottles in their wake.

If you buy a 4x4 because it's cool but never need it, then the joke is definitely on you.

Screw what other people think. I like my PreRunner more than a 4x4...not for performance reasons or what not, but because I knew damn well if I got a 4x4 I'd get the mod bug again and spend all my money on the truck (not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm starting law school and tuition money needs to be tuition money). At least with the PreRunner I'm not tempted to lift it or take it off road.

    RIP Lucy.
    She's gone but not forgotten.
I pulled a high-centered Suburban off a big dirt mound a couple months ago. When my one wheel started spinning the guy says "that's not a 4 wheel drive?". I almost felt like being embarrassed...then it occurred to me "what a minute, why should I be embarrassed, it's pulling YOUR dumb ass off the mound ain't it?"

I wouldn't worry about what people think about your truck. It's your truck and the only thing that matters is what you think.

I had a 2wd ford ranger back in HS that would get stuck on wet grass. I swore I would never own another 2wd truck again. I wouldn't laugh at someone else for having one though. A 4x4 is pretty much needed in the northeast and for what I use my truck for. If the 4x4 isn't in your budget or have no need for it why bother?
