Show us your truck bed sleeping platform/drawer/storage systems

I was curious about those type rollers. I've only seen them in SS though. Are yours plastic?

 

$31 from the metal supply house. Home Depot wanted $92 plus tax.

 

I've seen some comments about polyurethane slides/bars. Using skateboard rails which are 15" long it would be doable with six offset per side of a drawer for a long bed. Thoughts?

 

It's much better metal as well. I bought some of the "everlast" brand metal at home depot as I wanted to test a few things. I could not get decent welds on it. Took it to the metal shop and showed them and they guessed cheap Chinese metal. I bought the same thickness and type of metal from them but a big sheet. It welded great.

Has anyone in here thought about/made one with a steel frame? I'd think some thin wall (14 gauge - 1.04 lb per foot) 1" square tubing would make a great frame, and just have 1/2" plywood on top. Wouldn't be hard to weld together.

This is almost exactly what I am planning. A modular system that can be removed if need be. Fucking 10 out of 10 mate

 

I was thinking about making one out of metal studs. But the planning would need to be perfect. If you needed to edit it, it would be damn hard

 

Nothing a little angle grinder wouldn't fix! I may do this. My current one is so heavy, this would save some weight. And it'd be a fun welding project.

 

You went with wood and slide out drawers? I think aluminum would be best buy alas, I have no tig welder or experience

 

My current set up is extremely crude, as I have minimal wood working tools and experience. It's a total of two 2"x12"x16' and two sheets of 1/2" plywood. All in all probably weighs 100 lbs. I think I could shave off 35 lbs or so, and it'd give me a good chance to modify it for my future fridge.

I have a steel platform. I had 0 welding Expierence before building it. I'm happy with the function and the project was fun.

 

That's awesome! What wall thickness did you use?

 

Honestly I have no clue. I know very little about metal. I do knowing is 3/4" square tube. Sorry metal is very new to me.

Yes. They fit nice and snug in a 1/2" hole, not quite 3/8" deep, and stick out ~1/8". Came in a package of 10.

 

I'm going to make cross rails out of metal. I'm going to use 1" square tubing that's 11g or 1/8" thick. With this size, I won't have to have vertical braces under the horizontal rails. I'm also going to make it where my totes slide under it. They're 8gal Rubbermaid Action Packer totes.

 

Just finished building out our bed storage & sleeping platform. The girlfriend and I sold our condo a few weeks ago and are quitting our jobs at the end of the month. We'll be going on a 3 month road trip across the Pacific Northwest before heading east to Portland, Maine for Law School, so our rig is designed to semi-live out of. Our two 100lb dogs will actually be the ones sleeping on the platform as we'll be in a RTT up above. A softopper covers the bed and will be surrounded by an aluminum rack that @Dissen86 is building for us. RTT goes on top of that, and a Thule box will go over the cab.

All plywood is 1/2 inch, but in hindsight I would have gone with 3/4 for the walls. I ended up building some support brackets that you can see in the photos. Probably overkill, but better safe than sorry since this is literally our home for 3 months. The only thing I still need to do is hinge on a back cover to keep everything in place since there is a small gap between the platform and the tailgate.

The pull out drawer will serve as a make-shift kitchen. Camp stove towards the tailgate, all other kitchen stuff on the back.

The green thing is a dog ramp for our old geriatric golden. Poor old guy loves riding in the truck, but can't get into it on his own anymore. It fits snugly beneath the pull out drawer. The girlfriend made it a requirement for this trip to happen and I wanted to keep her happy.

The black tool box is from Dee Zee and slides onto a plate that is mounted directly to the bed.
