Question...
Here in California in some places we have to have earthquake insurance on properties as well a fire and flood. Over there are you all required to have Lava insurance or is there such a thing?

 

Yes there is Lava insurance but unfouturnely most people don’t have it. These people are in basically in a lava alley and have been avoiding eruption for quite sometime. And that island is the only one with an active volcano. So most of these people will not be coved unless their house caught fire before the lava hit it.

 

I remember girls throwing tennis balls over the fence with their phone numbers when we landed to get of the ship to do some training.

 

So they all knew what they signed up for living in that area?

 

Basically, it’s part of living on that side of that island. The lava is always moving on that island. My good friend lives like 10 miles away from visible lava and we’ve riding bikes up to the lava and roasted marshmallows with a really long pole lol.

The whole island chain will feel the wrath from the volcanic fog (VOG) it just kills you. Drains your energy makes breathing hard and it gets really hazy. It sucks a lot.

 

We were there in 2016 when Pu'u O'o was flowing lava into the ocean and got a front row view. It was amazing. We're going to be back on the Big Island (Hilo) for a few weeks at the end of July. This situation is so much different and aweful. I hope, for all the residents, this ends soon.

Before I met my gf I was working on getting approval from my boss to work from Hawaii (I telecommute now). One of the areas I had narrowed my search to was Leilani Estates. If I hadn't met her it's entirely possible I would be living there now...

 

Wow man that’s crazy. Yea we’ve gotten really close to the flow into the ocean. The sulfur in the air kills you though. I hope you enjoy your stay in Hilo. My family lives in Kona and in Waimea on the big island so I’m a frequent visitor. My college buddy grew up in Hawaiian Paradise Park which is not to far from the current flow.
