Yup. That's what it is there for.
    Beats climbing over the windshield.

I'd already had to do that last year, since the plug on my F150 was further up than the one on the little SUV they were using to haul it with. On a tight left hand turn it'd unplug itself, lol.

    Edit- OH!

I also sold the 45hp motor that it came with over the weekend. Got $1400 for it, so right now I'm $200 ahead of the game for total investment in the boat!!

For sure. Not much gunwhale next to the windshield to go around on, so you pretty much have to go over it. Which means a 4 foot drop on the other side, unless you trust a swivel seat not to swivel.

Yeah, I hung a 60 horse Mercury off the stern last fall, basically right before I put it away for the season. Picked it up for $600 down in Berwick. Same wiring as my old motor, same prop spline count and size, same power tilt setup, etc. Now I can skip along at 30-ish at full throttle, it'll still get up on plane with a full load of people (5 adults, 2 kids, and a dog when we took it out last fall), and it's actually better on fuel than the old motor was, too. Probably because with just the two of us on board it'll hold planing speed (around 11-12mph) at 1/4 throttle instead of 1/2 throttle.

How did you find a 60 horse that works for $600! People around here are selling a 6 horse for that much. I've kept my boat project relatively cheap so far including a new to me trailer, but the engine is gonna torpedo the "budget build" and probably cost more than I have spent on everything else including a bunch of paint and carpet that just came in.

I paid $800 for my 6 horse! But it's a newer 4 stroke. If you look hard and often and for a LOOOOONG time you can find deals on motors.

    That's actually kind of a funny story;
He was asking $800 when I called about it, but it had been on Craigslist all summer (started out at $1500, dropped to $1400, dropped to $1200, dropped to $1000, etc as the summer went on) and it was September when I called. So he didn't want to store it. I showed up to take a look at it and he was trying to get it started but was getting absolutely nothing when he turned the key. I looked it over and realized that he had both ends of the battery cables hooked to the battery (he had all of the wiring, cables, and hydraulic lines looped up and zip-tied) rather than one end to the battery and one to the motor, which is why he wasn't getting anything from it when he turned the key. I popped it into gear and reverse and made sure it engaged, made sure the throttle advance moved the trigger as well, and offered him $600, 'because it won't even turn over'

Got it home, hooked the battery cable up correctly, and it fired right up.
I know, I'm a horrible, horrible person, lol.

Meh. I hung it on my boat and sold the old one for a profit instead. So I got more HP and still made some monies. :notsure:

Yeah, you definitely can. But it also certainly takes time, and you need to have cash in hand when it pops up or it'll be gone before you can get there. Fall is also the best time to get a deal, it seems like, since people would rather sell them for a little less $$ than trip over them all winter.

I have been looking for a couple of months, but I want to use it in June..so I'm getting short on time. Considering biting the bullet and getting a new 4 stroke and just making sure I take good care of it so I never need another one.
With a little work or searching on a forum I bet he could have solved that, sometimes people pay for their lack of effort. And people like you who know what they are looking at can get a steal. I've heard so many stories of the broken lawn mower or snow blower that just needed a new spark plug that I've lost count.

How fast does that thing swim? I might make you an offer o_O

What sort of power are you looking for? I'm assuming you're looking for a tiller motor, right?

I was thinking 10-20hp, but prefer the 15-20 after some reading. I want a tiller for sure and I am split between a 2 or 4 stroke, I am looking for reliability first, I only know so much about small motors and I don't want to have it shit the bed on me the few times I will use it a year. I have memories of our old 60 something johnson broken everytime we tried to use it growing up. That was because my aunts and uncles abused it, but I still can't get it out of my head. Been looking at mercury and tohatsu engines, Hondas look nice but are quite a bit up in price.

The older stuff is pretty bulletproof; nothing to really go wrong except for points and wiring. Once you hit the 80's everything switched over to solid state electronics, which can't really be diagnosed easily and are expensive to replace (the switchbox on my motor, for instance, is over $100. A stator is around $200, aftermarket). But, when they're working correctly, they're usually lower maintenance than the older motors. Six of one, half dozen of the other. :notsure:

I thought that the corrosion coverage was just for body panels?

The small Evinrudes are now too, I believe.

The Merc-Tohatsu partnership started in the early 90's, I think, and Evinrude about 5 years ago.
