Is it even worth my time going in for the 5k service?

    I agree

Yeah like what could go wrong? They don’t change the filter? No big deal, right?

I spent $40k+ on the truck and haven’t went to the dealer since I purchased it. I trust my own oil changes and regular maintenance than Toyota. And that does not affect the warranty.

It is actually 2 oil changes, my old 2015 got damaged in the service department and that's how I ended up in a 2017.

No free oil change at 5k. That’s at 10k unless you really want it done earlier and your dealer is willing to do it.

I would much rather spend 15min rotating my own tires, checking fluids, etc rather than 2-3hrs for the dealer to do it. I’ve spent enough time at my dealer as it is.

Only reason I’d have the dealer do it is if I had some warranty work that needed done at the time or if I wanted to annoy them more about rear diff howl/clunk on down shift haha

I'm supposed to wait till my 16K (10,000 miles) service for my 1st oil change, but I'm going to demand it get done at my 8k (5,000 miles) as it will almost be 1 year of ownership.

I did it, just to have the records that everything was done. When the freebees were over, I just started doing it myself and logged it in the maintenance book.

To reset the reminder, it's basically in that center display between the tach and speedometer.

Oh, don't forget to check the blinker fluid. Lots of reports that many Tacomas left the factory low on blinker fluid. If you don't have enough fluid, the relays overheat and fry the CPU. It's like $10,000 to replace the relays, CPU and the wiring harness. Very expensive mistake that won't be covered under warranty if they find you were not checking blinker fluid level.

You'd be within your right. It's every 10k or 12M.o. by Toyota service standards.

they had me at free, but lost me at the 35 minute drive after work and then the hurry and get it done since it'll be time for them to close, plus all the horror stories i've read on here plus i don't have much faith in the work these low paid unskilled lazy 19 year olds that all work at my dealer...just because you helped your dad change his oil 2 times in life doesn't make you skilled in my mind....hence why i can do it myself...literally 30 minutes and done myself without wasting gas or spend 2 hrs with gas just to hope they did it right...think i'll just do it myself this weekend and change the oil since i won't have to argue to get it done

Everyone saying the service is free, but you paid for it in the price of your truck.

Why would you NOT go? I'll be going every 5-6 months to get the most out of the Toyota care. It shouldn't take them more than 1-2 hours per service.

I just did mine last week, only took 45 mins total and I was out. No room for a dealer to say anything about skipping routine maintenance either. You already paid for it also....LOL

You paid for it (no its not free) when you bought the truck. Might as well take advantage of it.

"inspect and adjust fluid levels". Looking at colored fluids in see-through containers to make sure it's between the clearly marked lines. I've also learned that doesn't mean they top off fluids. If its higher than the "low" line it's within spec. :frusty:

Didn’t read all three pages so idk if this was already said...
But yes you should go. If something goes wrong with your truck the dealer can blame it on you not following suggested/scheduled maintenance requirements and possibly deny a warranty claim.

Don't you want it on record that you went in for warranty purposes?

I brought it in and had a list of concerns that they ignored. Brought it in for 10K service with the same list plus a couple more. They agreed to have me come back to replace just the drivers door seal, although there is wind noise all around and again completely ignored the rest. I’m thinking I need to find a new dealer. Very unfortunate, as one reason I bought it from them because of the convenient location. Driven Toyota trucks for decades and will probably never buy another new one again.

I probably won't go since this isn't included in Canada and they want $70 for it.

They can't blame it on the 6 month service because there is nothing they actually do in that service that they could blame any failure on. I called my dealer and they admitted 10k mile (or 12 month) is the interval to follow for warranty purposes.

Depends on the vehicle for me.

OWN: If I own it, and there is free maintenance, I take advantage of it. Between free maintenance I even do oil change at my home.

LEASE: If it is lease for my business, I don't do the maintenance even free. My last Lexus LX570 was returned at 45K, with original oil, and not a SINGLE service. The 2018 SR Tacoma I bought last Friday for my farm, will be with me 3 years and 45K miles. It will not get a SINGLE maintenance, free or not. It isn't worth my time, and after 45K it isn't my problem. My leases get the cheapest gas put in them, regardless of requirement. Driven hard, put away wet, and never washed or maintained. I only wash it ONE time, before lease return.
