My theory exactly. The last car I leased, I never even washed it. Why I never buy used cars.

Funny thing is, I leased a RCF in place of my LX this time. I have used the same salesman at lexus dealer for last 17 years and all of the leases. So she knows I don't maintain, and doesn't care as she knows I am a guaranteed sale for 100K every few years, and I am a direct referral for at least 4 lexus vehicles for her a year. As I was leaving with RCF, she says "are you going to put the used Nexen tires like you did on the LX to meet the specs of the lease inspection again ? :D "

I said well as ex Toyota corporate employee, I never even had to put the tires on. These days I have succumbed to at least doing that :D

Around here, you can pay $40 for what they call "4 Lease return tires." They are basically throwaway tires but meet the minimum required for the inspections.

Lease return tires are big business, which goes to show, tons of other people do this as well.

So, when you bring it back, for $40 you get tires? Are these used tires? That's awesome! My last lease I was beginning to think I should've gotten the tires rotated because the fronts were almost down to the wear indicators but the rears were almost new (FWD).

But my own car. I maintain it like it needs to last forever.

Well most cars at 45K miles, tires are fine, so no problem.

However, on some vehicles, IF AT that time, tires are bad, there are local shops where you take your leased vehicle, say at 44,987 miles. They will source you 4 tires, that will meet the minimum threshold for $40. It doesn't matter type of tire. Yes they are all used junk tires, other people have thrown away, but they meet the minimum threshold for leases. :D Then you go from tire shop to dealer, and turn car in, and pass the minimum tire inspection. So basically in 3years, 45K miles, I spent $40 extra on "maintenance"

My owned cars are mint, overly maintained, and showroom conditions.

honestly i will be changing the tire soon enough so a rotation is null and void to me, i can visually check all fluids myself and windshield wipers work as normal ( they throw water out of my sight in the rain without scratching the windshield) i won't lease a car because it's literally throwing money out the window just to show you have a nice car that will never belong to you in any way plus i drive way to much to pay for extra mileage or be limited by it and you can't change anything ( even tint the windows) so whats the point, i do understand companies will lease a car for the tax write off and so they don't have to maintain it regularly ( hence why i'm done with used cars unless i know who owned it and what they've done with it)...if the dealer won't fix anything under warranty because i didn't waste my time then thats why they have a corporation that they work under..really not trying to argue, people have their own ways to justify what they do

I take my Wife's new 4Runner in for the 5000 mile check, Oil change every 10,000. I could do it myself but I want a record of it just in case something stupid pops up. I do not want to hear any crap about "You missed a service" from the dealer. just my.02.

One benefit to leasing is you always get something newest and most reliable (in theory). My mother leased a Honda CR-V 2 yrs ago, has 10.5K on it now. Not sure if she will buy it or get another lease this year..part of me hopes my wife can buy the current one.

My mom is on dialysis so it's worth the extra money to get the peace of mind of always having new or almost new for that.

The other great thing you get with new cars (by leasing or buying often) is you get the latest safety features and typically improved crash structures over previous generation. I love my '98 1st gen, but by modern standards, it's just plain unsafe - 2 two bags, but no abs, no side curtain airbags, no stability control, etc, etc. Nobody chooses to get into a crash, but when you do, it may mean all the difference.

Just about needs and such. They never cared to buy new cars, though my mom always had a decent one. My dad used to drive the biggest junkers.

Very true, but that's what trade off means. The no ABS though was a buying choice versus it not being available in that time though.

Take in for service and any new recalls you aren’t aware of get taken care of. That’s how my wife’s Camry got a new dash. If I didn’t take in for service, or gone to an independent shop after warranty was up, wouldn’t have found out. It doesn’t hurt to take it in for 5k services, and having the records can help when you sell the truck.

This taco's the only vehicle I've ever owned that came with bundled maintenance. My previous vehicles (mostly Hondas/Toyotas) had the usual every 3k or 5k maintenance intervals. I usually go in for the 15k and 30k service intervals.

On a few notable occasions, I've been able to point out to the service writer how I've diligently come in for service and am disappointed xyz stopped working despite all the manufacturer suggested maintenance. I've received pay-for-parts-only type repairs done long after the warranty expired. When I look at the maintenance costs over 150k miles + some of the discount fixes I've gotten + the time I saved, the total cost wasn't unreasonable.

I would not give them the opportunity to scratch my wheels, over tighten lug nuts, spill oil on my engine, and leave grease on my seat and steering wheel!! Thanks but no thanks for the "Toyotacare". I do my own maintenance with genuine parts and keep records.

Bring your earphones and sit back in the lobby with a movie or tv show. It doesn’t take long and it gives you piece of mind. Your tires are rotated, fluids topped off and your maintenance record stays clean.

Fyi..brand new Tacoma owner here. Do the Tacomas get a standard scope service at each servicing, checking the on board computer for errors and what not? Have had Minis for years and this was part of every servicing and why I would always bring it in to them for service. Just wondering.
