I can't say enough good things about Allen and everyone else at Ron Hibbard. Cool Springs screwed us on my truck, Beaman takes forever for service and are not personable at all.

I may have to make a trip up to Gallatin then! I have some parts for valve cover gasket swap from Gunny at Camelback, would it be an issue if I brought them for install?

Hey y'all! I posted up in the Tennessee thread, but I figured I'd jump in here too. No clue which one sees more traffic haha

I'll be moving down to Nashville in July/August from Boston, and man am I excited! Do you know how long I had to search to find an apartment with AC up here? Or off street parking? Seems like most of the ones we have looked at around Vanderbilt come with both haha

If y'all have any advice for neighborhoods to avoid or look at, anything I should know not to do on my truck, etc, let me know! All advice is welcome!

Welcome, the TN thread is certainly the more active. I just read through the comments over there.

I can't really help with the neighborhoods, as I prefer life in the sticks. Though I'm not sure it gets hot enough in the north to need A/C...

As for your truck. Just don't fuck up anything emission related, that would make it pollute more than it did from the factory!

    Awesome, thanks!

Yeah Boston has about a month of what they consider hot weather a year. Probably 80s-90s, never over 95 since I've been here. Hot enough that I enjoy having an AC at night, but that's about it!

Sounds great! MA has yearly safety and emissions inspections and the rules are ridiculous, so I'm happy to be leaving. Just got to pass inspection this month and I'll be done!

If you live in Davidson you will need to get emissions tested, it's basically a pass if you don't have a CEL.

As far as neighborhoods to avoid, see this shittily made map I made:

Also, owning an AR-15 isn't banned like it is in commiechussetts, so enjoy that too!

Or any county surrounding Davidson. Wilson, Sumner, Robertson, Cheatham, Williamson, and Rutherford all have the same emissions testing. Typically that's because everyone in those counties commutes into Nashville. Be prepared for traffic.

Well emissions testing sounds easy enough! I couldn't even think about touching the exhaust in MA without failing inspection haha.

So it looks like if we want to live anywhere within walking distance of Vanderbilt Law School it may be tough? We had been looking in the area you marked as "One block good, next block bad. Projects". Is there anywhere around VLS that would be safe enough for my girlfriend to walk too and from campus?

And yes I plan to empty the safe at my parents house in CO and everything to Nashville since CO is starting to look more like MA/CA. I'm excited!

Yeah traffic here is pretty bad too. We live north of Boston on the outskirts of the city, and it'll take you 40min to go the 2miles into the Boston proper. My commute takes an hour to go 25miles west of Boston, and that's the reverse commute! That's why I drive something I love, MPGs be damned!

I work for the Vandy Med Center and I bike to work every day from West End Park (the green area to the left of Vandy). It takes me about 10 minutes. Are you trying to rent or buy?

Definitely rent for the first 3 years haha. Renting up here is super intense, I have people coming view my apartment tomorrow for an 8/1 lease, which is already late. And the rent is ridiculous!

there's plenty of apartments in West End Park.. just depends on what you're looking for. They go from super cheap to super expensive... and everything in between.

I don't think we are hiring where I am; but between us girls, you don't want to. You won't have a problem finding DEV work around here.

    Good luck!

You'll probably find more stuff in Brentwood or Cool Springs related to software, however there are some more corporate gigs at HCA and Vandy that have software jobs. I am a data analyst for Vandy.
I had good luck using https://www.padmapper.com/apartments/nashville-tn to find my first apartment, especially since geographic location was important to me.

Nowadays, I prefer more family-run leasing management places over the giant cookie-cutter apartments (which tend to beat the word "luxury" to death when they really have no right to use it to begin with). The family run places will give you a lot more for your money than the big complexes which often look at general economic stats to see how much they can steal from you in rent. The mom-and-pop apartments I have lived at have never increased rent more than $20 per year, and we actually negotiated this time around and they didn't raise our rent at all.

I have been with the big complexes in college, and they really treat you like a child with all the fees and dumb rules, not to mention the atrocious increases in rent every year and shoddy workmanship of the buildings in general, coupled with slow maintenance and poor customer service and the luster of the "luxury apartments" you thought you were moving into will quickly wear off.

Right now I have a 2 car garage, two bed, 2.5 bath townhome for as much as most folks would spend on a "luxury" 2 bedroom apartment cracker box. But you typically will not find these places just doing a google search. That's where padmapper really comes in handy, as it scours craigslist and other odd places on the internet to find the more local leasing places. I would imagine some only post a sign out front with a phone number. Basically, the less a place feels the need to advertise, the better, generally speaking.

You should look into recruiters. That's how I got my current job, they do a lot of the grunt work for you (and buy you lots of lunches). There are tons in the area, a few I'm aware of: TEK Systems, Vaco, Insight Global

    Thanks! I hope you're right!

Yeah I'd much rather be in a townhome than an apartment, and my girlfriend agrees. I don't mind doing handyman work and fixing things around the place, and I tend to bristle at all the rules for apartments. I'll check out pad mapper.com as well as craigslist.com! It would be easier if we were there to actually look at places though. I'm wary of scams when we are a thousand miles away haha

I think I'm already emailing with recruiters for a few of those! I don't mind dealing with them haha and it would save me a whole lot of hassle! Time to study up for the ridiculous technical interviews that have very little to do with my daily work...
