DC extreme country vs KM2

I know tire threads are kinda like beating a dead horse, but I don't see a lot of reviews on the extreme country. I had a blowout this weekend, so now I'm looking for new tires, I've been on 31's but am looking to move up to 33's, but staying with a 10.5 width. I'm pretty narrowed down to between these two tires, KM2's just because they seem to be tried and true, but when looking and pricing I came upon the extreme country's. I would save almost $150 going with them over the KM2's.

Not super worried about noise (I'm coming from a set of tires that are probably 10-15 years old, so anything new will be quiet) more worried about the actual lifespan of them, and if there would be a huge difference.
Basically if they are gonna wear the same then I'd go with the extreme country's, but if the KM2's will last 10k longer, then I'll pony up the extra money.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, planning to order one or the other in the next few days

 

Those are Dick Cepek's mud tire, yeah? My coworker runs them, they're loud. I can hear his tires from my truck while following him on paved roads. He seems to like them though!

 

The KM3s come out in June, don't bother with KM2s if you can hold out a little longer. No experience with the Cepeks.

 

I thought about that. I'm worried once they come out though they will be either really hard to find in stock, or really expensive. Or both. I could probably put my old tires back on and make them last that long, but it would suck to wait and then not be able to get my hands on a set

 

I used to run a 255/85/16 KM2 and they did good for me “got around 40k out of them”. If I had to do it over again I would probably give the Cepeks a try to save some cash. My dad runs 35x12.5x20 cepek fun country’s and they have held up very very well.

 

Had the KM2 255/85/16 on my series 80 (now it has toyo MT's) and they were good tires no complaints, on my 13 Tacoma I am running the 255/85/16 DC EC's and so far I like them. The dc are a little louder than the KM's but they don't bother me because I run MT's on most of my rigs. Performance wise in the mud and snow so far I can't tell much if any difference, price wise I would go with the DC's if you are going for looks the KKM2's IMO.

 

The size he would most likely want will not be available until March 2019 as mentioned here.

 

I am also in a similar situation....I like both, but it will probably come down to cost and availability.

Meh. I’m not about to pay a premium for the newest latest and greatest, when the old version is still perfectly good. Reminds me of the people standing in line to pay $800 to replace their year-old iphone...

now would probably be a good time to pick up a set of 2’s for a great price...

 

Another reason to go with the KM2’s...

The BFGs are more expensive, but not by that much... maybe $100? I’d go wih the BFGs, I don’t think I’ve owned anything else. Whatever crap came on my 4runner will be replaced with some KOs when they wear out.

 

We clearly have different opinions of the KM2s. Cute iphone analogy but the KM2 is over ten years old at this point so not that really the same. BTW I'm an Android guy.

 

I would buy what you want, either one isn't cheap and if you go with one based on price alone you might be stuck with them for along time.

 

Thanks for the heads up, I saw that on another review that 16's will be the smallest wheel size when the km3's come out

 

Just got my new wheel tire package today. Went with the DC extreme country. They look awesome to me and I’ve had good luck with DC before. Guess only time will tell. Good luck!

The KM2 is a good design, and always will be. The KM3s look like great tires with a bit more aggressive sidewall, but the changes are relatively minor, and the size I want won't be available for over a year, if at all. If this means I can get what is still a great tire for a good discount, I'll jump on that in a heartbeat.

As for the phone analogy, I purposefully wait for the next phone to come out, so I can get last year's model for 1/4 the cost. It's not like phones (or tires) stop functioning when the new model comes out (unless you have an iphone where they design the software to run slower on your older model, lol)...

And if you can't already tell by my making fun of the iphones, I have an android, too... Currently sporting the S6. Might go the the 8, now that the 9 is out...

 

FYI, I just talked to two places (Costco and four wheel parts) and they both have km3's in 15 inch sizes in their computer already, not avaible yet, but they said they should be available at the end of June, four wheel parts said they have several hundred of my size (33x10.5x15) on order already.

Also interesting to me, is at Costco they are actually cheaper then km2's, 209.99 each vs 218.99.

Just throwing the info out there because until today I thought they wouldn't be in 15 inch for quite some time
