Keep your receipts so Toyota can reimburse you if and when they expand the recall.

I literally just printed the invoice and also saved it as a PDF haha I’ll be sending it to my two corporate contacts just to let them know how much I had to spend to fix this damn noise ha

I'd also mention it every time you take your truck in for service. Sucks you gotta do it, but the tsb repair fixed my truck virtually completely. Hopefully it all works out for you.

Got mine done last week. They didn't have all the parts in and only changed the springs the first day, drove it for a bit and it whined just liked originally. Once they installed the interior parts including the new body mount, i'd say the noise has reduced significantly. I can deal with it now. Thanks Toyota. Now i just have to get that fuel pump bird chirp fixed....

Yes sir that is my plan. It sucks that i am not patient and had to pay for it ha but I still won’t stop being a squeaky wheel. I will be emailing and faxing it to my corporate contacts after I install the parts. I’ll also let the two dealers know. I’m only one person so I know they could care less, but hopefully it will make me feel a bit better about the whole experience.

So I finally dropped off my truck yesterday to have the 10,000 mile service done and to have 3 TSBs (whining noise, Entune TSB, and cross wind noise TSB) done and the dealer just called and said they could replicate all 3! He further stated it was “rare” that they could replicate all the issues (based off my past experience I’d agree) on the first try. They fixed the Entune and wind noise and parts for the whine noise will be here tomorrow!

Sounds like you have a solid dealer!!

My rear diff howl TSB parts should be here today! Ill install the damper tonight but the pad will have to wait until my sound deadener and foam arrive.

I’m honestly surprised. In the past they have not been so great but I think they were bought out a year or so ago (or finally got a decent GM) and if you have a concern they now jump on it and find a way to get it fixed. I’m sure it’s money driven but as long as I get the fix I want I’m perfectly fine with them getting their money from Toyota. Best of luck to you to on your fix. Please keep us posted on your progress because I think many other will be doing the DIY fix.

Good to hear they have changed for the better! Wish I could say the same for the two Toyota dealers I have been dealing with lately ha

Thank you! I’m a bit worried I’ll still have quite a bit of howl after installing the dampers. That’s why I went ahead and bought the foam and deadener. I bought it all off eBay on their 15% off day. I can always return it if the damper does a good enough job on its own.

I’ll try to take pics of all the parts and cab mounts if I remember.

    Here are some pics!

Pad pillar #5, dynamic damper, and stopper.

Well, there is no point in buying the new stoppers as they are they same ones that come on our Tacoma’s.

    Old/New
    272A933C-1AF7-415F-8758-2175F894B0DE.jpg
Oh well I replaced them anyways ha

The dynamic damper is pretty heavy. Makes sense since it needs to absorb that howl.
    A178C473-6DE3-4EF4-94E1-A16533D3B8E7.jpg

The flat washer aka stopper goes first and then the dynamic damper goes on the end.

The pad pillar will have to wait until I get my foam and sound deadener. I highly doubt it will do anything though. I already put my own thicker foam in the c-pillars a few weeks back and it didn’t help with the noise at all.

So I had gotten what I thought was the pad pillar from my local dealer a few months ago. Well, I think they put the wrong sticker on what I bought as they look nothing like what I got today ha

    6678FF97-6FEA-42FB-9279-3145AD2D7F21.jpg

Oh well I believe I can still return it. Especially since it’s a wrongly labeled product.

So how does my truck sound now you ask? Do I still have the rear diff howl between 53-61 while feathering, decelerating, and light acceleration ...?? Can I still hear it with the HD radio set to 35???.............. I will find out tomorrow!!! Haha I will check on my way to work in the morning. I’d rather not try it now and still hear the howl. I want to wait few hours before possibly being disappointed haha

I bet you will still hear it. "Hear" me out though....lol, sorry.... anyways, I noticed mine right after me TSB was done as I was listening very closely for the difference. I was pretty pleased with the difference, but you could still hear it. Now however after a couple of weeks, I notice nothing. Your ear has been trained to pick up the howl, but once you change the howl tone, you find that your ear isn't picking up any of the noise. I'm sure if I drove with the windows up and AC and radio off I would still find it, but since I normally drive with the rear slider cracked at least, the radio on, and I use AC, I find myself not even thinking about it now because I can't hear it. Before I could hear the howl over all my normal usage noises. If I use my truck in a normal way and have no noises, I consider it completely fixed. If you go out of your way looking for a problem, you will find one.

Ultimately I think you should be ok even though you aren't changing all the parts per the TSB. I think the important ones you have.

Hahaha oh I have no doubt it will still be there in some way. Mine is very loud and very annoying ha

Well, if it changes to a pitch less noticeable to the ear I’d be tickled pink Hana Im really hoping at the very least it reduces the 9mph howl range down to 2-3mph max. I’m just having a hard time believing that little damper can help that much.

Also, I have a DCLB so once I put the pad pillar in that’s it for the TSB parts. No leaf springs for long beds. It will go in with additional pad and sound deadener. I’m hoping once I finish it all up that my howl will be fairly quiet :fingerscrossed:

My DCLB got new leaf springs as part of the TSB.

I’m very happy with the results. About to create a bunch of new headaches with a lift and adding 3-leaf AAL to TSB leaf pack. Doing ECGS and other preventative measures though. Install happening 5/21.

Oh nice! They went above and beyond for you. LB aren’t supposed to get new leafs per the TSB, but I’d be happy to get them anyways ha

I read on here somewhere that a guy only got the leafs installed (damper was back ordered) and his howl didn’t change at all. I’m thinking damper does pretty much all the work. Will find out bright and early tomorrow.

I was gonna point out that some LB's in fact got new leafs, but I see that's been done. My howl was pretty bad on decel from like 60 to 40, or thereabouts. I could hear it with my radio on 30 and window cracked. And my howl didn't show up until 16k miles. Just showed up one day and that was it.

Yeah, a few dealers have just done it all for some people. Then there are my dealers who won’t even give me a $1 discount on parts ha Oh well that’s done with. Knowing my luck the TSB parts I just put on will probably make my howl worse haha

That is quite the range! Mine holds the 35+ over the entire howl range, but it’s only from 61-53. Well, and at 43mph, but you have to have the radio off and windows up to hear it for that one.

So odd that some start right away and some take thousands and thousands of miles. How can one explain that? It just doesn’t make sense to me.

Good to know! What was your howl like before and after the dampers were installed?
