    To you guys in hot places with the AFE CAI, plug or no plug in the air box? I’ve always run the plug figuring the air is cooler coming through the fender.

    I’ve never pulled the plug out on mine. It might let more air in, but it’d be hot air so I figured better to come from the fender area.

    I have my plug in but the lid has spacers on the back side to hold it open a tad to let the warmer air escape that isn't being used by the engine. And the fender air is coming from the fender in half of the opening and from the snorkel inlet that on the other half. And i know the snorkel works to draw colder air in. When I sit at a light I can watch the intake air temp climb and as soon as I get over about 35mph it drops back down to ambient temp. But is it a restriction under hard boost? That is why I was going to take the lid off and open the plug to see if my AFR's will come up.

    To my knowledge no one has ever flow benched the stock sc intake area to know for sure. But, we can take some guestimates. Lets just guess that the sc inlet piping is 65 mm. IF that is the case and we also have a 65mm tb then the tb would be the most restrictive part due to the fact that it also has the butterfly and butterfly shaft that sits right in the middle of the airflow path.
    Keep in mind the tb's potential for improvement is in two areas, throttle response and wot power.

    1. Throttle response increases due to the fact that for every degree of butterfly opening, the larger butterfly allows more airflow then a smaller one.
    So a 5% opening of the 76mm tb will allow a significant amount more air than a 65mm. This is directly felt as the throttle feels more sensitive to input with the 76mm. (this may not be ideal for rock crawling, etc)

    2. Part throttle there will be no change in power with either tb because in this throttle range (say 20-60% butterfly opening) the smaller tb can still keep up with the engines airflow requirement although the larger tb may require less throttle input to get to the same power level which fools us into thinking we have more power.

    3. At WOT the engine requires max airflow, duh! The larger tb has much higher flow rate (CFM) at the same pressure drop than the smaller one.

    Resistance to airflow is not only restricted by diameter, but also the length. If we can reduce the length of the restriction by installing a larger tb then we have reduced the length of the restriction.

    I just did the 70mm tb and ported the adapter and the s/c inlet to match. Throttle response is better, and the power feels a little snappier in the mid range rpms.

    Been there done that.

    They both draw ambient air.

    I do like how aftermarket intakes remove the filter housing from the top of the damn engine tho.

    It does, but it doesn't flow enough air with the snorkel and the factory intake. I need the larger opening of the AFE. With the factory intake my AFR's are in the 7's, with the AFE I am at least in the 8's. LOL When I go long travel and glass the snorkel will be removed. Or if I ever get the extra cash to buy the new snorkel actually made for my truck to see if hopefully it covers the holes I have in the fender from the snorkel for the Hilux. I did the snorkel long before they made one for our application and long before I supercharged it.

    Ok, so when the ECU is in open loop AFR sensors are no longer part of the input. Do we know inputs are being used - MAF, TPS, rpm?

    Thanks for the detailed response! Yeah that all makes sense, I'm also curious if anyone has run the difference on a dyno because If there is a benefit you would only really see it at wot unless you like having slightly more power at the same throttle level.
