So I avoided getting skinwalls on my DH bike when I bought tires last week because I couldn't find any good pics of them on a black bike. Then I go to check Pinkbike this AM...

It's paradise for folks like us. Thousands of miles of 4x4 trails and some of the best mountain biking on the East Coast, and a dope secret campsite at the top (pictured) all in one place. I'm fortunate to live so close.

How are you guys locking your bikes when you mount them in the bed? I have 2 Thule fork mounts on the front bed rail and was considering just cable locking the frame to a RTT bar and then using locking hardware on the bar, but didn't know if there was something "easier."

Cable locks are stupid easy to cut through.

I went to Lowe's and bought 10-15 ft of decent chain. Put it inside of a cut bike tube for frame protection and run that through the frame. Lock to the bed D-rings, bed rack, whatever with a good quality lock.

If you have a bedrack / RTT like me, back it up against a wall if you can before you go in to eat. Pretty much no way to get my bike out of the back, especially without looking like you are trying to steal a bike.

Oh I know the cable locks suck. This is honestly just for the purpose of going in somewhere to grab a bite to eat. I am getting 3 bars for the back for the RTT but won't always keep the RTT mounted on it. I figured I could find a way to lock the bike to the front bar though. I was considering having a U shape welded on so that I could reach my u lock from the frame to the bar, but that still leaves the rear wheel without security.

Is that like a storage compartment bottle or what is that on your bike?

We use two fairly inexpensive “hardened” chains I bought online, an off-brand motorcycle oriented product with a nylon sleeve that looks like a Kryptonite chain clone for 1/2 the price. My thinking was that it’s probably harder to cut than hardware store chain. One thing I like about chain vs cable is that it’s easier to snake though places (independent of thickness) because it doesn’t have the stiffness of a cable. Also, my chains have a large loop at one end so you can route the other end of the chain through and this get more usable length than a cable with a built-in lock. That said, the tie down loops I secure the chains to, with mid-grade Master padlocks, are probably easy to cut, and I’d think every bike thief now has some Torx drivers, so all this does is slow folks down.

All you have to really do is make it enough of a pain in the ass that they move to the next truck.

It's kinda shady, but I park my chained bikes next to a truck with cable locked bikes all the time because I know which ones are getting jacked first.

Any idea what this screw is for, there is also another one about 12" or so from it?

Probably to hold cable for different routing options or for running a 2x or 3x system. Just a guess.

My Salsa and Kona both have random bolts like that.

Kinda odd on a Diamondback, but for a Salsa, I would have guessed bolt on frame bag attachment points.

For a DB, a large frame pump maybe?

EDIT: External cable routings points for the cable clamps. Some of the lower spec models have them in the pictures in the exact same spots.
