Anyone here run All-Terrain tires in the winters? I bought my Truck at the tail end of winter and drove the stock tires in two snowstorms. I know I am not doing that again. Had a terrible butt puckering time with fishtailing, but I didnt have any weight in the rear either.

Trying to decide if I want to go All-Terrain to save money and time (One set of wheels, no swapovers, not juggle two different tires, etc) or get a dedicated snow tire. On previous 2WD vehicles I've always gone dedicated snow tire.

I try not to drive in snow when I can help it but some days I need to be able to get to work no matter the conditions.

I run all-terrains all year round on my trucks. The only exception is the plow rig, which has a set of studded all-terrains. I've never had a problem, and I run in 2wd all the time, except for shifting into 4x4 to pull through an intersection or something. I used to load weight in the bed, but I don't even bother with that anymore, because I got sick of having to either unload or work around the bed weights whenever I made a grain/home depot run. Closest I've ever gotten to running a winter tire on a DD truck during the winter was when I had a set of Duratracs I ran during the winter. :notsure:

The only thing I am afraid of is that feeling of the ass end breaking loose and sliding around presumably because the stock tires cant shed snow. That was not a good feeling. I never had traction issues other than that in the two storms I drove through with stockers.

I've run AT tires for over 20 years and have managed winters just fine.

Which tires do you have, the AT Adventures? Because they're rated for severe snow duty, so there shouldn't be any traction issues. Too much throttle will always break tires loose in bad weather, winters or AT's, especially if you're cornering, so you just need to get used to where the 'threshold' is for traction on your throttle and then you'll have no problems. :notsure:

The SR5 comes with Firestone Destination LE which is a very mild All Season

Well then those will have more issues than an AT; they're really an all season and will load up faster. Stepping up to a more aggressive pattern will make a big difference in the snow, but you'll get some more road noise and probably a bit lower fuel economy.

I have run Toyo ATs the last few years and they worked out just fine. The first couple of years I add 3 cylinder blocks in back which made the truck really solid on the road, but this past year I didn't even bother with the blocks, no issues.

Thats kinda what I figured, I just wanted to get everyone elses experience before I committed. I'd hate to get ATs and then still end up having to get snow tires.

What brands/tires have you run and been satisfied with?

I currently have studded Firestone Winterforce LT on separate rims. I bought them from a friend who was EMS in Carabasset Valley. They are significantly louder than the stock tires and I probably lose 2 mpg. They are a little better than the stock tires in the winter, but I still slide around. I am still using the stock tires in the summer until they wear out enough to justify buying something better.

Honestly the only AT that I ever had a problem with in the snow was the original BFG TA/KO's, and that was 10-15 years ago on a Jeep. The new KO 2's are supposedly much better in snow than the old ones were. If you get a name-brand AT, regardless of brand, you should be good to go. I also have to show up for work regardless of the weather conditions, and with a decent AT I've never had a problem in the last 10 years I've been doing it. I've run everything from Coopers to Bridgestones to Michelins to several varieties of Goodyear and never felt like I didn't have enough traction.

Toyo AT in 285/75/16s, when these tires wear out I'll probably switch to Cooper S/T Maxx.
