I love my JBL upgrade. Sure it's not as capable as an aftermarket setup, but I didn't want someone mucking with my vehicle and electronics. I wanted a factory fit subwoofer housing and wired up by the factory. I got what I wanted. Mind you this was before I was aware of the OEM Audio company. That is a good alternative for non-JBL owners. (http://oemaudioplus.com/toyota/tacoma-options/)

When I want bass, I increase that sound setting and turn up the volume. Simple as that. I get the output I desire.

I do currently have a damaged driver-front tweeter/speaker that is being replaced under warranty. Just waiting on the service advisor to return my call this afternoon on the order status.

I didn't take it that way. I would assume most people are in the same boat as you. Pay more for the premium sound assuming it's better. Is it better? I guess you could say so since it has an amp and a sub. But the speakers are not good quality. They just throw cheap speakers and a little emblem on the head unit and call it good.

My disappointment comes from paying much more on my wife's rav4 only to find out, it's horrible. Definitely not worth paying more for.

The way a speaker looks is not an accurate indication of how it will sound. In the audiophile world, some of the most ridiculous looking speakers are the best sounding. No truck speaker will be audiophile quality. As someone in the A/V business, that has auditioned audio systems in the 6 figure range, the JBL system sounds pretty good.

All I know is, I paid a pretty premium for the JBL in my wife's rav4. The alarm clock in my bedroom has more bass. I almost took it back to the dealership thinking it was unhooked from the factory. But I put my hand on it an could tell the sub was actually on. After researching, it's a common complaint.

So, on my way home from work, I plugged into the USB port and it’s WAY better. The Bluetooth audio totally blows. It has the power but the speakers seem to struggle with handling it.

Anyway, I appreciate all the feedback. I’m definitely considering a speaker upgrade. Sounds like some good options without breaking the bank.

The JBL amp is not too bad, but the speakers are worthless. Remove them and set them afire.

I generally like the jbl speakers but I am considering others. The issue is that the jbl are 2 ohm. Most good aftermarket are 4 ohm. That will result in a reduced volume with the new speakers. Perhaps that he after market are more efficient but I’m not sure. Even if you put the new speakers in your cart at Crutchfield and you have your jbl Tacoma as your baseline, Crutchfield will note that you will experience a reduced volume.

Not many 2 ohm after market options.

I had a 16 non JBL and now have an 18 with JBL, it sounds noticeably better to me. I also changed the head unit out with an aftermarket Alpine which upgraded the sound and customization options.

Which vehicle did you do the head unit swap?

My current, the 18 which has the JBL components. It's the Alpine ILX-F309 headunit. Whether its their presets or customization, it sounds better to me.

Does it allow you to adjust things like the door lock settings, and the how long the lights stay on and such? Like the stock head unit does?

I can't say for sure because I had adjusted mine before I swapped it out, but I don't think so. It does give you access to some vehicle info, (TPMS, fuel level, speed) on a gauges screen, you can access the rear camera at anytime, but most importantly and why I wanted it, the carplay/android auto (Waze, spotify, and the ability to actually send voice to text messages other than the generic responses)

Also, I put an Amazon firestick in the HDMI port.

    That's what she said.

Back on topic, I plan on swapping mine out with Kenwood DNX995S. It does all the things.

I almost picked that one for the massive 9" screen but then I read it was only 800x480 screen resolution. That's what put me back at the Kenwood.

That's the biggest gripe, but honestly I think the resolution is fine for what it is a radio. That being said I wish it was better.

Can you PM me and let me know how this goes? I have the speakers ready and waiting to do mine when it gets here. I’m wondering if I should pick up an amp and a sub while I’m waiting.

    RE: Alpine head unit picture.
Looks like something thieves would see and gravitate towards given how non-stock it looks. For me, that would be too much in my face & distract me from driving. (But that's just me.)
