Need help on blue ray stuff..

OKAY guys I know nothing about Blue Ray players.. Girlfriend wants one for her bday, so.. i gotta get a good one. BUT i dont want to spend a grand either..

I'm hoping to spend around $100. Anyone know of what i should do, what i should look up.. or even brands.. anything would help. I find some on Google shopping that fit my description.. but i don't wanna buy crap

anyway, any help would be rad.

I'd get a Sony, since they established the technology, they have better platforms for playback.

If you're not looking for frills like WiFi or Internet connectivity, you can get a decent Blu-Ray player from Best Buy for $150.

That looks like a pretty descent one. Well I hope you know that a blu-ray player can only be appreciated with a HD TV. If you dont have an HD TV, it will be like watching a regular plane Jane DVD. But I mean Blu-ray is the way to go since thats what the future holds.

I hope your tv has the connection for the HDMI input or else your girlfriend won't be getting the best use of the Bluray player. I would recommend checking out Crutchfield for more information on building a home entertainment system.

If you really want the best quality to your TV, make sure you get one with an HDMI output. (And that your HDTV accepts HDMI).

Also -- keep in mind other peripherals like audio. If you're good with your TV speakers, or a single output, that one's good. But if you're running surround, make sure you get something that supports your audio.

If you want to up your spending a bit, I'd say just get a PS3. It's arguably one of the best players out there. It can be updated with the latest blu-ray features(3D is coming soon if your into that) and you can play some decent games as well. New ones are $300.

 

I recently just purchased one for myself. For $100 you're only going to get last years or even the year before's models. The older models were plagued my slow load times. The players that came out this year have gotten a lot better and are faster. The new ones also have many more apps available than before for streaming content if you're into that kind of thing. I'd stick with Panasonic, Sony, Samsung or LG. The lower end model from each are as follows:

Sony BDP-S370
Samsung BD-C5500
Panasonic DMP-BD65 (BD45 foregoes Vieracast streaming apps)
LG BD550

 

No, you can get one that just has an Ethernet port for a wired connection.

 

A good blu-Ray player will probably cost more than 100. Even though a ps3 is above the set price range, I still say save up and get a ps3. The Bluetooth remotes they come with are fantastic! They coonect to the Internet via Ethernet or wifi. You can also stream movies and music to them from other devices. You can rip all your CD's to the hard drive. You can also use flash drives or discs to move movies, pictures and music to the hard drive. They have a web browser that is compatible with USB keyboards and mice. They also play games. Sony sells them cheaper than whAT they are actually worth (they make their money on games). In actuality it's a better deal to get a ps3.

PS3 is ultimately the best choice if you can afford it.

 

Look for one that streams Netflix or other places so that when your local video store closes you have options. The Insignia store brand at Best Buy has current models very close to $100 that have decent reviews at pcmag.com and other places.
