Is high mileage for a newer year a red flag?

I'm looking at a 2009 Tacoma 4cyl 5speed and it's got a shade under 48k miles. That's a lot of miles for that new of a truck. My question is, should i be worried?

I know that kinda mileage is gonna hurt the resale value and whatnot, but is there such thing as stressing the engine or the components by putting that many miles on a car in such a short time? Or am i just being paranoid?

 

If it was well taken care of I think it would be fine, but I would hate to buy a truck that is a year old with no warranty.

 

I would rather have a newer vehicle with high miles as opposed to an older vehicle with low miles. The former would be sitting around a lot drying out seals and rotting away. The truck you are looking at probably has spent most of it's life on the freeway and not in stop and go traffic. If you can get it for a great price, I would go for it. JMO.

 

What's the warranty period?

 

Nothing wrong with high mileage, as long as all the maintenance was done and done properly as well as the vehicle has been taken care of.

High mileage = lower cost to you and bargaining power to get an even better price.

Just make sure you go over it with a fine toothed comb, ask for maintenance records, carfax, DRIVE IT in 2WD, 4WD, 4LO etc.

I'd agree there's nothing wrong with high miles alone, but I do think it's a red flag if you don't know what it was used it for. I'd not want to look at something used for pizza delivery, for instance.

Does CarFax tell you if it was used as a commercial delivery vehicle?

 

36 mo/36 K miles 'bumper to bumper'. 5 year 60 K for drivetrain...or something like that.

 

So i'm having a gut feeling, call it intuition or whatever you will, that I shouldn't consider this car. Am i just being superstitious? I mean, this guy did put nearly 3 years worth of driving into this car in just over a year, is this something i should be worried about?

I haven't run the carfax yet cause i don't know how serious i am about buying. It's from a dealer so if i called them, do you think they'd be able to tell me anything about the history of the vehicle or would they just tell me what i'd want to hear so they can push it out the door?

 

Here's my car salesman experience.

High mileage on a newer car means it was probably a rental/fleet vehicle that the dealer picked up at auction.

High mileage on a newer truck, possibly fleet but usually just something the guy used for work, and maybe had to go to fullsize. Check out how worn the inside of the bed is. That could give you an idea of how it was used.

Also, what part of the country? Out here you have to drive long distances between civilization. That could be a factor.

Whatever it takes to put your butt in that seat. Carfax will help, but they don't have everything, just what was 'reported'.

I had the opposite problem, 2 yo rig with ultra low miles. Why would someone get rid of a cherry like that? I found a used vehicle inspection service that went to the lot and went over the rig with a fine-toothed comb. Sure, it cost me $125, but I could buy the rig and put that superstitious feeling to bed.

 

I dont think its a problem at all. I have an 09 with 60,000kms and they are mostly highway. so yeah as long as its properly maintained id say it fine.

 

I have an 09 with 48k. Drive it every day for work. oil changed every 5000 no issues. you can also buy an extended warranty from toyota. mine cost $1200 5yrs\75k covers just about everything

 

i bet it will be fine. use the mileage to your advantage, and parlay it into a lower price.

 

My 2008 FJ Cruiser (bought in Nov 2007) is about to turn over 49,000 miles. Mostly all highway miles, which is much better than city driving. Commuting ~65 miles a day.... I wouldn't mind high mileage at all if it's highway miles. For example, even though this FJ is at nearly 50K miles, it's on the original brake pads, which are in good shape because it hasn't been stop-and-go driving in the city.

 

Any dealer would run a CarFax for you if he wanted the sale, especially selling a late model vehicle.

Unless he knows something he doesn't want you to know...then you have to dig it out yourself.

You may look at an extended warranty if your not feeling right about the deal. That could cover the main things for up to 100k.

 

I got the CarFax report on it and it came out clean. It was a one owner vehicle with no notable history. However, here are a few concerns that i'd like the forum to address if they could please:

The yearly mileage was calculated at 27k miles per year
Dang, that's a lot of miles. You sure this doesn't have any effect on the longevity of the car? Is a mile really just a mile?

There weren't any "routine maintenance" records that came up
Which leads me to believe this guy either changed his own oil or didn't at all. Driving that much, he'd have to change his oil like every month if he was "taking care" of the car. Should this be of concern if he didn't change his oil every 5k miles or whatever the suggested rate is?

The vehicle was registered as "personal"... does that really mean personal?
Basically, to have that many miles this guy was either a delivery boy, worked for a company and hauled a bunch of stuff around, or drove cross-state to work every day. Would it show up in CarFax if it was a "company vehicle"?

I can get a pretty good deal on it, would it be worth it?
This basically goes back to the thread title. I plan on running this thing into the ground so i don't care about resale. However, I am just weary of a car that's been driven that much in a short amount of time. Just trying to make sure i'm not being paranoid or overcritical.
