What is this???

I am curious about what you see in the picture. What is it called? I would like to remove it and replace it with a new/clean film or something more durable. On that, how do I remove this film? Anyone care to share what they did?

 

Try removing with a heat gun. Its just a thin plastic protective film, looks like its seen better days.

 

Yep its ready to go. By the looks of it, it did its job. Im trying to find a replacement to order so Im not driving around without something protecting that area. Any ideas what to put there or what to order?

70% isopropyl alcohol will cause it to release. The dealership has replacement pieces

Mine looks about the same and has served its purpose well. Id like to replace them with new ones too.

 

I believe it's just 3m tape. You can get it by the roll in different sections on Amazon. Keep the old for a template.

it's "clear bra" or something like that. check Amazon. I ordered some for my tailgate so my trasheroo would not f it up while I wait for the eventual awesome bumper replacement.

 

I removed all the factory clear film from my truck. I had someone to do it for me because I’m lazy but it will come off with a heat gun.

 

I've seen guys paint them ..... always black.

 

Asking you because I know you're into detailing.... When polishing and/or ceramic coating the paint, I assume you just work around these?

It's not like clear bra, it is definitely glue underneath. I had a heck of a time getting it off a 10 year old Tundra, maybe easier for a newer truck but I doubt it. I used a heat gun, a lot of fingernail scraping and goo gone in a spraycan.

 

Waxing over won't hurt. I did it for 13 years on my 2nd gen and they still looked new when I sold it. If you're running the polisher however, I'd skip it with that and just do it by hand.

I polish over the film (with a pad I’m about to change out). The reasons... it makes the film look better lol

When I apply my sealer I go up to the film and just be careful to buff all the excess off the edges.

You would not lay a ceramic coat over the film.

 

This is pretty much the only part of my truck that looks bad. I’m a little afraid to try to remove it, scared I’ll make it worse.

I'm pretty sure this is the part number for one side on the double cab long bed 58741-04100

They are pretty expensive for what they are. I bought my truck used and noticed that one side was missing one. So I researched and found that part number, but haven't bought it due to the much higher than expected cost. So, you may want to double check that it is indeed the part you need, the side you need, and if there's any difference with the DCLB, DCSB, and Access Cabs.

 

If you have no idea what it is, how would you Google it? Questions like that are a main part if what this site is about.
