I thought about it but he had already sold it to someone doing the same thing by the time he called me.

I didn't have much of an itch to scratch, more just expensive lessons.

I bought a Dodge Stratus in 1996 because I went to a dealership by myself. It was okay for its day, but I overpaid for it and it started to implode not long after 100k. We had a saab convertible and a volvo wagon in between. One of those would not happened if we had the Taco. The motorcycles would have happened regardless (mid-life crisis at 33 due to my Parents short lives). The waste of money Ural sidecar might not have?

Thankfully, the Swedes taught us that near-lux / luxury cars are just a gimmick. The saab was really well built, but there were better choices out there that keep the costs much more reasonable. We finally learned and are completely happy with our Taco and Subaru.

So if I bought a Taco in 1996 for about $22k for an extended cab 4x4, we would have saved about $33k plus taxes and probably quite a bit on parts for the Dodge and fucking Ural.

My 01 feels better than my 18 actually. Albeit both are mint, nothing is broken.

17 feels the best, but I paid a lot more for it than the 01/18 strippers.

I still have mine. I just don't see the financial sense in buying a 3rd gen. I'd rather invest my money. My 1st gen is no longer losing its value... no point in buying something that's a guaranteed loss.

I sold my 2002 last summer (shown on my Avatar) at about 275k miles for $6500. It was clean, stock and had no rust (Cali car.) used the cash as a down payment towards my 2017. It was starting to show its age with creaking and some loseness in the joints, as all well used but cared for off road vehicles do, and would be needing some new bushings and a timing chain soon. I started to worry about the inevitable problems that come with age, particularly getting stranded in remote desert areas, and I was really pushing it when towing our new travel trailer. The 2017 aleviated the worry, and towing with it is a breeze. No regrets, and the 2002 went to a good home.

I've thought about getting a 3rd gen, but I like the smallness of my 1st gen and the no payments. 3rd gens just scare me with all the problems that people keep posting. And the noise and no room, it's a truck. Not a caddy

Seriously, there’s a point where maintenance cost overruns depreciation with older cars, most noteably when compared to depreciation of Tacos!

This is true. Truck is in for timing belt, valve adjustment and cover gaskets.. won't need to do that again for another decade. Cost over that period of time is dollars a month.

Seriously going to stretch it out for a decade? Curious what that work costs? Mine would have easily cost $1500 - 25% the market value of the car!

Timing belt is every 100k Miles.. I barely drive my truck anymore. I'm lucky to put 10k a year these days. Last time TB was done was at 66k miles sometime in 2008/2009. Now at 182,000

I'm very unlucky. My dad bought an 18 last month, dont really like the autos and not specially ordering one. Besides, 40k could be spent better elsewhere

But still have this one with 242k on the odometer. The intent has always been to sell it, but I guess you could say I'm in no hurry!

    qr-1-20180311_175546.jpg

But to answer, no I don't regret it. Still drive the old one from time to time. I do enjoy the toughness, dependability, size and maneuverability of the Gen1, but damn sure am pleased with the upgrade to the Gen3 so far. And the locker is damn nice too. Things that would give me some issues requiring momentum and wheels spin in the Gen1 (SR5, no locker), this Gen3 just breezes right through.

Time will tell if the Gen3 is as reliable and tough as the old Gen1. I certainly hope so. Most trouble free, reliable vehicle I've ever owned.

You should be able to get way more than 6k for your 1st gen. I sold my 1996 1st gen with 253k miles on it for 6.5k in January. It was not in the greatest of shape (besides the interior which looked awesome). It needed some work (leaking t-case, leaking front diff, oil leak somewhere on engine, cv axles, etc) and I pointed it all out to the guy that bought it. 6.5k was over a quarter of its 1996 MSRP. I do miss it :(

I do not regret getting my 3rd gen. It does have its quirks, but I still like it. Just test drive as many as you can as much as you can.

Sucks to hear of your bad luck.

For my farm truck, last week I shopped F150, Frontier, RAM, and the $22,000 for the Tacoma was the best deal I saw, for my needs.

Man with 140,000 your first gen is just broken in. I would keep it. You're going to be losing on that deal and there is just no point. The first gen is the better truck. Once it starts falling apart then you should look into a newer truck.

Mine looked like yours too. I didnt mention this in my earlier post, but we sold our clean ‘85 SR5 Toyota PU “Mula” (Mule in Spanish), and “Birdie”, our clean ‘95 4-Runner for lack of family space in the PU and air bags in both. The 2002 didnt have rear side airbags, so that also went into the equation in justifying our 2017 purchase- cars and trucks get so much safer with each new generation than the last.

I had two 1st gens. I now have a 2nd and 3rd gen (both manual). 1st gen is still the best gen.

1st one dealer would only give me 3600 for. 4 weeks later I got over 10k for it.
2nd one dealer would only give 5k, 3 weeks later I got 16500.

Don't trade it in. Buy the 3rd but keep the 1st gen or sell it yourself.
