Bed rack that is not a ripoff?

anyone have experience with bed racks NOT made by Yakima or Thule that fits a 3rd gen? I just need to transport canoes and occasional long lumber.

Edit: Or maybe not. I was thinking of the bed cross bars, but then I realized you need to clear the cab. Maybe he's got something else that'll work for you, I don't know.

Rola makes a good looking rack that carries 800lbs and fits the Tacoma very well. It’s rock solid. I use mine for carrying canoes, kayaks, lumber, ladders, etc.

I did the tracone ladderac system a-la-carte. Picked up the racks on e-bay for $295 and purchased the bed rail clamps for a 3rd gen Tacoma separately on Amazon for around $70. Very happy with the setup. I use it to transport a 14 foot tandem kayak.

 

Prices for EVERYTHING in life are set by the consumer, not the manufacturer. It's called "what the market will bear."
What that means is other people are willing to pay prices for a bed rack that you deem a "ripoff."

Our company is getting ready to introduce a new product for us. The first thing we did was survey the competition's pricing of a similar product, because we know that is what customers expect to pay for that product. We then determined we could produce a superior product and price it around the average cost of our competition.

No ripoff. Try a "hitch hand" of you want an economical method of hauling canoes and long lumber. It doesn't look as cool or rugged as a bed rack but it works very well. Here

I respectfully beg to differ. Most people don't want to do any research and just go with name brands cause they are lazy/busy/don't care. Just cause people are willing to pay it doesn't make it a good deal, even from an objective perspective.

There is no way that the product Thule is selling is worth 800-1,000 bucks.

 

This is actually the one I'm leaning towards. Does the clamp system work well with our plastic bed rails?

 

2x cab height bars from me will cost $200 plus shipping.

 

OP, Very sturdy, well made. I have not been on the highway with them on, 50 mph, no noise issues.

Ha. If people are buying them, lazy or not, then the product is worth the price... to them. How much is a name worth? I'll save you some time and give you the answer - A name is worth it's weight in gold, if it's the right name.

 

I use these to transport my kayak too, been up to 75-80 ish with em no problem. Very sturdy. Not sure about where to find kayak cradles though, I just put my cheap boat directly on them. I'm gonna want to find a better solution when I upgrade kayaks.

 

I completely agree with you. However, the purpose of this thread is not to debate the invisible hand and power of the free market. What I'm saying is that there are wonderful products out there, often at higher or similar quality, that are more reasonably priced (in the eye of the beholder) than name brands. I wanted to know what those are! Case in point...there have been 3 or 4 racks posted to this thread that are 600$ cheaper than the Thule and have gotten great reviews around the web!

 

Jleeb- the Rola works very well with the Tacoma. Assembly takes some time. Maybe about 1.5 hours. Once installed, it really works great with the Tacoma bed rails and track system. It looks good and is very solid. It’s occasionally on sale. I think I payed $275 last summer from etrailer.
