Hello out there tacoma world!! Glad to join. These forums helped out alot on my 99 tacoma accidental rebuild. What do i mean by "accidental rebuild" you ask? Well..I bought a 1999 supercharged tacoma ( 2nd gen s/c i believe) and i did not know much about supercharged vehicles when i bought it. My brother is a long time mechanic so i figured if there were any small issues he would be there to fix it. The truck seemed to run perfect when i test drove it, and i fell in love with the power. 30 HOURS LATER the temperature guage was in the red line. So my brother and i ripped into to it thinking head gaskets. Turns out the block was cracked!! Then i come to find out about pulley sizes and fuel mods through these forums. I should have researched first. Any way there was a 2" pulley on it with the 7th injector and no methanol kit, which i know it needs with the 2" pulley. This may have been the reason the block cracked but we also found there was stop leak in the engine and newer looking head gaskets , heads and knock sensors which makes me believe this guy screwed me on purpose (he also never mentioned it should be running meth). Any way i put another block in it with ARP head studs and new gaskets from the bottom to top. Besides the moneybit was a blessing in disguise because i can confidently build my motor from bottom to top again if need be. If any one needs a bit of advice on engine rebuilds for the 5vzfe 3.4 tacoma engine i can help a little or point in the right direction. I definitely still have a few questions( i switched to an 2.65 underdrive s/c pulley) wondering if i should get it tuned again?( it was previously dyno'd with the 2" pulley) Also wondering if i can run a 2.2" pulley with just the 7th injector and be fine. And if so would i be taking away the engine life with the 2.2 pulley and the 7th inj? Im not 4 wheelin like crazy and i just need the extra power sometimes in traffic. No racing will be happening. Just regular comuting. Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome! If it was tuned for the 2", you should be good going with a larger pulley, just not smaller. I used to run a 3.4" on my TBSS when DD, and swap to a 2.7" or 2.9" when I was going to do anything fun. It was tuned for the 2.7"; the 2.9" and 3.4" ran without issue. Sucks about the POS that sold it to you, but sounds like you have it going now. Sounds like he pulled the meth kit to sell/use elsewhere. The nerve of some people.

Thanks everyone! Wow. Didnt expect any responses that quick. I should have signed up when i started building it. Rather than piecing bits of info together here and there. And thanks for the info BULLNETTLES :) i totally get your point there. However i havent been apart of the mechanic/ engine world for longer than 4 weeka haha. What do you mean by TBSS and DD? Lol (see im super new) . Again..i got the point " i dont need tuning" im just curious now. Also if i went to a 2.2" pulley would the 7th injector be the only mod that i need to prevent not only the knock/ping but the integrity of motor? Ill send pics in a little bit! You can totally see where the meth injection or nitro was at one point!

Do you have a scanner checking for knock? TBSS is from another world; had a Trailblazer SS (LS2) with a MP112 blower. DD = daily driver. Once you get it set back up, you probably want to have someone check the tune. Maybe dyno it with people who know the software? I don't know, I'm not even green on Tacoma tuning, hopefully someone else will chime in. I know there are a few vendors around here that tune them, I'm just not in the know. Leaving the drivetrain on this one alone for once.

Oh, and I hope meth/alcohol. If he was running nitrous... that would have been interesting.

Bullnettles...its not pinging or knocking at all as of yet. But i only put 200 miles on it since i rebuilt it. I just want to make sure that it wont happen if i put on a 2.2" pulley on it with 7th injector. Is the 7th injector the only mod that i need for 2.2 pulley? Any one else feel free to chime in:)

20180424_203821.jpg you mechanics may enjoy my little tool hack. Realized after taking out the exhaust cam shaft gear it was a split gear that was spring tensioned. we should have used a service bolt to hold the gears together.-we didnt - so i had figure out a way to twist em back to the right position. Its impossible with your hand to do such things. I didnt have a vice or a a tool...so heres what i did...its a C clamp on the corner of the work bench held down to the bench by two smaller C clamps to make my vice. Then 2 bolts in the holes where the tool was supposed to be and the wrench over one bolt and on the outside of the other for leverage. I was able to twist the gear the one tooth up and put the service bolt in the hole to keep the gears together. I was proud...so i thought id share it with yoy guys

I'm not sure with this particular setup, but more H2O/meth and/or fuel will be needed if you're pushing too much air in there to cool the charge/fix the AFR. Are you running a wideband, by any chance? I'll bow out of this one since I'm still very new to these trucks. Nice hack and very nice truck, btw!
