That's AWESOME! Nice chopper! What did you catch him on? Fish finder rig?

On a side note, Chesapeake bay was a bust, couldn't even catch a croaker :bananadead: I did accidentally snag into a cownose so that was a fun 10 minute tow around on the kayak :rofl:Did some trolling on a sailboat, but running 3, 4 and 5 knots was a little fast.

This weekend is another surf fishing trip for me. I'll be fishing Oregon Inlet so hopefully I can catch some of the choppers or drum that are around!

He ate a mullet strip on a bottom rig with a 3 oz pyramid lol. That was fun to cast with the little rod, good thing they weren’t out too far :)

That's great! Glad it all worked out for you! Were you able to catch anything else? What did that blue measure? 30 inches? I love me some fried bluefish :hungry:

Never got a tape on it lol
That was the biggest but we caught several approaching that size
I filleted one about 18” marinated in citrus and grilled it. It was delicious :)
I was planning on bringing a few home to smoke but the bait shop guys had me paranoid about the mercury content of the bigger ones.

Didn’t fish as much as I would have liked to cuz family was there, didn’t catch anything but bluefish. Guy up the beach caught a few puppy drum tho

Sounds like a fun time! Defiantly a good size blue. There is always mercury warning on a bunch of fish, no different than the tuna in a can. Glad you enjoyed your trip though!

Ah, yea that's a training facility that mimics some kind of Navy ship I believe. One of those beaches where you need to know someone to get on it lol

Most of us are using a 13’ rod capable of throwing 8oz plus bait. The length of the rod helps with distance needed to get over the bar into deeper water where the fish generally sit. Rods can go anywhere from $150 off the shelf to upwards of $600 for a custom high end rod. Popular reels are penn fathom, penn squal, diawa saltist etc.. all holding 250-300yrds of 16-20lb mono with a 40-50lb mono shock leader their price range is $160-$220.

Really isn’t any technique that can’t be taught through typing, but if you practice casting you’ll be fine. Also, right place at the right time with the freshest bait you can find helps. My buddy and I lucked out yesterday morning, we were the first ones on the beach and had 10 before 8 (ramp 44 allows traffic at 6am this time of year). Bite slowed down and picked back up at 3. We would have had 20+ a piece of it wasn’t for getting burned off by other people or rigs failing from getting chaffed up by previous fish.

What Baits do ya'll use? I've used live pinfish with some success (that others swear by) in the Sound haven't ever tried surf fishing for the big bulls yet. I bet with the tides and what not they put one hell of a fight up.

Do your research. There’s a lot of good stuff out there, but don’t be spending $400 plus on a rod you won’t use very much. Watched loads of people with cheap stuff catch fish lastnight (it went off again and I got 5 more).

Cut mullet, bunker or even tuna belly. I’m sure anything will Work but that’s the easiest to get when you don’t have time to catch bait. Live pinfish work great for drum, but not in the surf. Lots of times in Hatteras you’re fishing a swift current and small pieces of bait will roll with an 8oz weight, and that’s what you want, a slow roll with your bait (at the point mostly). If you had a live whole fish, it’d be like flying a kite, the current would pull you down the beach so fast you be tangled up with others before you know it.
