Welp, was just loading something into the bed of my truck when I noticed some chipped off paint on my tailgate right near the taillight. Down to metal. No idea where it came from, haven't loaded anything in the bed in weeks and didn't see this last week when washing.

Worth touching up? Leaving it alone? Wondering if this will start to get worse/ rust spread like wildfire. If it's worth touching up can you please recommend me some touch up paint? It's already got some light surface rusting going on.

    Thanks!

Any recommendations, or a link, of what to use that worked well for you?

It seems like toyota paint is soft on edges. Our Rav4 got some chipping like that around the back hatch and also along the edge of the hood. I got a bottle from the parts department, I´m sure I overpaid, but I got it that day and its a brush and pen in one. Definitely touch it up.

How much did you pay for a bottle? What a pain. Probably not going to have time to get to the dealer this week, hopefully it doesn't get worse.

I can´t remember exactly, I want to say about 20 dollars for Hot Lava, which is basically inferno but on a Rav4.

I have a small bottle of touch up paint i got for 5$. Works fine for little spots to make them less noticable

Can't be sure from photo, but it looks to be the area circled below?

Lock your tailgate? From the corresponding marks on your tail light lense, almost wonder if someone was trying to pry / pop your locked tailgate open so they could steal it?

At any rate, were it me, I'd get some tough up paint on it.

That's exactly where it happened. Thing is, it wasn't locked, so really can't say! I've ordered that dupli-color paint pen and it'll get here by next Tuesday .I'm gonna keep an eye on it and brush away any rust that builds up .

The paint from the dealer includes a small sandpaper tip that works really well to get out that little bit of rust in the chips. Then just touch up the chips, it will be ok then.

Thanks. I think the dupli-color thing I got has a brush tip as well for that. Hopefully it'll work well. Pissed off about these chips.

Noob question here, will it be necessary to prime + touch up pen + clear coat or is the touch up pen sufficient on its own?

Primer shouldn’t be needed after you get the rust off, but you will definitely want to put clear coat on over the paint as well. Automotive paint, as I’m told, will eventually wear off and become dull. Clear coat keeps the the applied color intact.
