Decided to check the Oil Catch Can oil collection. This is what I got in 3000 miles/4 months. Oil that would have been burned in the piston chamber adding to deposits.
Let me know if you want it or it goes to Good Will.

I'm frying a turkey next weekend. I'll take it, as long as the shipping costs aren't through the roof.

I'll just let it get burned away. Too many trucks with too many thousands of miles for me to worry about it.

Wow. Surprising. That’s about the same amount my 6.4l HEMI blew by

That’s a good amount of oil and contributing to deposits. But, I doubt it’ll keep the engine from going to well beyond 300k miles.

Someone was posting on here about all 0W20 oils contributing to deposits that’s why he runs a 30wt. There’s some certification.

I’ve been in the garage all day with quite a lot of beer, but I’ll still attempt a search.

Soon the rings will be so worn from the too thick oil not doing its job they will need 30 weight to seal the gaps.

Is this just a US CAFE phenomenon?

What about all the other Toyota 3.5L engines around the world running 30wt factory fills?

I was thinking of all the engines made for 0W20.

I’m pretty sure it’s not really spec for 20wt outside of CAFE standards for MPG.

But, the current 0W20 wt oils are so robust they don’t shear and will protect up to 10k mile OCI and beyond.

But even some synthetics (Mobil 1) and yes Toyota GMO can shear down fast so if you have a light 30 wt it can easily become a 20 wt by 10k miles.

I’m just pointing to evidence from BITOG.

TEOST sequence IIIG. Ow20 and 0w16 we’re lobbied for and granted exclusions from this test by ILSAC

Meanwhile most other regions of the world recommend 5w30 ilsac and even ACEA a3 rated engine oils for the GR series.

This doesn’t mean immenent failure on 0w20.it just means the engines are less sensitive to viscosity than many would have you think.

The 2gr-fks is a worldwide engine.it runon variable fuel qualities and engine oils around the globe.

Yes, it's a "global" engine with 80% US application. It is only used in three nameplates: Toyota Tacoma, a few Lexus, and the Toyota Aphrid, a van primarily used in Japan. Most Tacomas and most Lexus are sold in North America.
It can safely be assumed that most of these engines are running 0W-20 lol.
You are right though, a decent oil close to the proper viscosity changed at regular intervals is the key to long life. That, and the all important quality filter, are the keys. Not brand.

Some members on here run 0W40 in all of their vehicles including Toyota, and I mean everything including lawn equipment. They must be German.

My 1st Gen 3.4L I put 0W40 in it regularly, it seemed to love it. Even left it in the wife’s 4Runner for 20k miles and almost forgot about it.

Back in my crazy oil days ie German Castrol, Delvac 0W40 and Shell Rotella I put that shit in everything like Frank’s Red Hot!

Now it’s Redline group V poly ester, some say there’s Redline then there’s everything else. It’s the only 100% poly ester base stock oil (along with NEO) sorry Amsoil fanboys down to PAO and group 3.
