Your insurance company will find them. Don't worry about it. They actually care about this, unlike the cops.

The excuse that they couldn't ID the state is bogus. Even if the plate # matched a completely different vehicle in a different state, this is clearly a lowboy trailer and will have a higher weight capacity on the reg. Deductive reasoning can easily single out the most likely reg. info.

I’m sure they can pull a camera at the intersection where you were hit. Not sure who “they” would be.
Edit: Even you can't get the actual footage of the accident, there will be cameras all over recording his truck traveling along the route. Google "how to obtain traffic camera footage"
Also I would go back and start getting eyewitnesses before things get cold. We do it all the time in our fire reports.

those pictures look cropped, can you post the originals?

What color was the truck cab? What make? Looks like it's pulling a CAT dozer, or was it from another make? Case/Deere etc? I have some friends in NC that may or may not be able to help based on that info.

Try calling the nearest scale house near there. He will have passed it or have prepass would have cleared him. Either way they will have pics of his plate and know who he is

If that is a major corporation then likely the plates are from the home state of corporate. If that is the case then once you find out the company name you will then need to get dispatch to tell you what driver was in that area at that time. This may turn out to be a tough battle.
Also, question here, that is a low boy trailer, how and what part of the trailer hit your truck that high, or was it actually the equipment on the trailer that got you?
Do you remember the color of the rig or maybe a symbol on the door?

over-size/over-weight permit required by State DOT if they used Highway system. Permit lists tractor and trailer license plate. If they crossed the State Line they are on video when they had weight/pre-pass registered. GL.

It's tricky. I could be wrong but I don't think they can randomly run plates without a reason, not even state troopers. Once a police report is in hand and there's an active investigation, then they can run plates.
