You forgot to quote the paragraph above yours haha:
"Tribology is the science and engineering of interacting surfaces in relative motion. It includes the study and application of the principles of friction, lubrication and wear. Tribology is highly interdisciplinary. It draws on many academic fields, including physics, chemistry, materials science, biology and engineering. People who work in the field of tribology are referred to as tribologists."

Science. Check. Engineering of interacting surfaces in relative motion? Bet your ass there is. Principles of lubrication? Mos def. and I agree, it is HIGHLY interdisciplinary. I draw on my knowledge of all sorts of things when I’m at work. Materials science...aka “is this stuff gonna burn” personal interaction... “will my gf have a conniption if I use this all” duty cycles... knowing when enough is enough. Equipment failure etc

Pistons in a bore, gear teeth meshing, chains around chain rings, bearings loaded up = interacting surfaces in relative motion!

My 2015 Toyota Manual "recommends" using Top Tier rated gas. Www.toptiergas.com. These stations add additional cleaning agents beyond the minimum EPA requirements. I think it makes a difference especially if you plan to keep the truck for 10+ years. My plugs looked brand new at 30k(required change for emissions warranty). If I'm in the middle of nowhere ill buy if I'm below 1/8th tank, but 99% of time I buy from top tier rated stations. Running higher octane has no conclusive evidence that there is any benefit for engines designed for 87 octane.

First time doing my own maintenance on my 3rd gen (factory maintenance plan expired) My buddy had purchased a bulk order of royal purple and never used it. I was planning on using mobile 1 but he sold me 18 qts for 80 dollars. Just couldn’t refuse the deal. So now my question is, is anyone using royal purple? And is it safe to use 5-20w? I know the factory recommends 0-20w.

I literally use whatever is the 0W-20 fully synthetic oil that is the cheapest at my local auto shop at the time. Last time, Mobil 1. Before that, it was Valvoline.

Are you in a pretty cold or warm climate? 5W-20 would perform more differently in a cold climate.

    Amsoil signature series 0w-20.

    Amsoil exclusively since 1979.

All climates from south Texas - central Minnesota - south California - north Georgia - east coast Florida - and now middle Colorado. Never a problem and always 25,000 change intervals (filter at 12,5k).

25k miles!? I haven’t seen anyone going that long. I thought I was pushing it at 9k!

The manual states 5w-20 is ok in a pinch, but you should use 0w-20 in your next oil change, if I remember correctly.

It just depends how you use it. But it's one of those things, "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." Personally, I still change mine every 5k. It's cheap maintenance. I've gone 10k before and didn't like the way it came out. I may try it again though since that was in my previous truck.

Never faltered. Even took advantage of their 36k authorized interval in my '93 Civic (290,00 on the clock now).
Synthetic doesn't "wear out", but the additives will get consumed. With the filter change - and a new quart going in (to replace what was lost in the filter), the additive package is replenished. So if the engine is mechanically sound, the oil remains "good for continued service". That is a direct quote from Blackstone Labs.

Pennzoil Platinum which Walmart has here for $22 for a 5qt jug and a Mobil 1 filter.

I previously used Mobil 1 in my '02 Tundra.

    Actually "you should".
Against my nature to throw away good oil, to pollute the landfills, and to waste money.
The truck sure isn't suffering from having quality oil in it. The labs confirm it is doing its' job for the whole duration. All my vehicles made it to over 260,000 miles before trading in on another one. Never a problem with any oil lubed system.

I do mine every 5k as well. Comes out pitch black. Cheap and easy to do it yourself.
