High Clearance Y-Pipe Re-route and Quick Time Performance Exhaust Cut Out

I've been thinking about Cat-back exhausts for a while but after watching countless YouTube videos of just about every aftermarket muffler installed on a Tacoma I decided I wasn't really a fan of the exhaust notes of the different systems. I did however find a couple of 3rd gen examples with muffler deletes which did sound pretty good to me. Considering I use my truck for cross-country road trips and towing a small camper a loud droning exhaust would definatley be unacceptable. So basically l wanted a quiet exhaust on the highway that was also as loud as possible With that said I ordered up a Quick time performance exhaust electric cutout, 2.5" cutout pipe and turndown tip.

I also decided it was time to take care of the lowest hanging part of the truck which is the exhaust Y-pipe. Its a matter of time before I pinch that off on a trail and to be honest surprised it hadn't happened already.

I had Performance Muffler in Phoenix do the re-route, cutout pipe install and I did the wiring. I highly reccomend performance muffler if your in the Phoenix area. Best quality and prices around and they were familiar with the re-route for Tacomas!!










The Cut Out itself appears to be a quality piece. Billet aluminum and made in the USA.



I installed the kits open/close toggle by the cubby. I cut off the inline fuse and wired the power through the Switch-pro for ease. I also found a "GPS" legend for the button (Got Power Simulator ). The toggle is next to my ign off charger. The wiring harness was exactly long enough to reach the valve. Maybe 2 inches to spare.

Also added a heat shield directly the exhaust pipe where it crosses near the transfer case actuator. Not sure how many more horsepower the heat shield gave but judging from the exclamation point probably 100?

After some hard driving I took some temps of the exhaust and T-case with my infrared thermometer.
Exhaust pipe 270F
Heat shield 110F
Transfer case and plastic actuator 140F

SO on to the important part!! How does it drive!? When the valve is closed there is no discernable difference from before. With the valve open it is LOUD! An unmuffled 6 cyl isn't for everybody but I like it! Also like the fact that I can turn it off

***The electric cutout is purely for fun. I'm not expecting any kind of performance gains with it open and will say I have not noticed any increased power or performance in initial driving.

That said, I just did my reroute and after seeing your post I'm ordering a heat shield

 

The heat shield is nice but the hose clamps it came with were not big enough. I had to run out and pick up three 2 3/4" to fit it.

 

Lets hear it! I really like the fact that you made this switchable. Major props.

 

Allright I didn't want to do it but here's a little sample of the sound from my smart phone.
Before the the truck starts you can hear the valve opening and the tone change at the end is the valve closing. I just gave it a couple revs to 2.5k since it was a cold start.

Thanks! I definitely like it. It's actually not as insane loud as you'd think since the exhaust is still passing through 4 cats. It does shake the seats a little when I'm on it but probably because it dumps right under the passenger seat.

 

That just sounds like fun (and tempting).

My friend keeps asking me to pull the cans off my bike after hearing it with just the headers. Two bolts and a spring to get both off. I need to this.

The cutout pipe actually came with a cover plate so if you don't want to use an electric valve youd just have remove the three bolts for the when you want some noise!

 

I'm thinking about that. Or, have a short section with a straight pipe to swap in for a pipe with the cutout.

I have a bunch of stuff above it on the wish list though, like the 2Lo mod.

But, a seat vibrator (panty dropper)!

 

I'm digging this. I'm thinking about getting a quieter muffler to cut down on highway drone and still have to option to be obnoxious offroad.

 

All noisy things aside, someone needs to come out with a weld your own re-route that's not a bazillion dollars. I'd buy the shit outta that

 

So performance muffler built this for me for $140 in 90 minutes. I brought the cutout with me.

After my expierence it was obvious why they were so well reviewed!

Too bad I'm on the east coast. My issue is that I have MIG, TIG, and all the fab tools I need, just not a bender that will do that
I also don't feel like my Tacoma exhaust warrants pie cutting pieces and spending all that time. I've heard of companies selling just elbows which may be another option.

Anyone know a good exhaust shop in CT?
