It is their job to be in the middle of it. They are the police and their job is to investigate accidents, even more so since this was a hit and run. The police report should have triggered an investigation and the photos are evidence that can (should) be used to locate the person responsible. There is no profiling going on here. Your point is irrelevant. Once the truck/trailer is located the paint color and damage location can be inspected and should be enough evidence to determine what happened.

I’ll get to speak with the officer who was on scene tomorrow. I’ll question if he has ran the plates and if not request he does. He should then be able to ID the trailer owner from there we can began to reach out and get more details....at least that’s how I have it planned out in my head.

Cops are funny. The truck being moved after the accident may give them the squirrels. My point about readers was an out and out hi jack.

I had a car stolen once and a set of prints were on an object outside the car. Clear as day. Even I could make out a whole hand. They wouldn't use them as the object wasn't in the car. Well, it was when it was stolen.

Edit: Good Luck OP. Hope they do find 'em. I'm just remarking that sometimes they're bound up and can't help much.

Yeah, but the truck in OPs picture looks to be missing the white stripes. That's not to say they don't have a truck that is solid red, but I would bet they have all their trucks branded the same.

^ If I'm not mistaken some logistics companies don't even track trailers by license plate but by its VIN. The license plate on the front of the tractor and the DOT# on the side are the most valuable things to get if possible.

Why don't you just provide the plate # to your insurance? They can run plates just like the police and should be able to track down the owner...trust me, they would rather pay someone a day of work to figure it out on your behalf than pay money out of pocket to fix your truck on their own dime...

BTW, that is an NC commercial plate.

The tag on the trailer is tied to the VIN of the trailer. Run the plate, you should get the VIN of the trailer.

The problem is that the insurance company has no incentive to actually try and find the driver. I'm not saying that they shouldn't, but here's the reality:

    1. OP pays out of pocket for the repairs with no insurance claim. (insurance company wins)
    2. OP files a claim with his insurance, pays the deductible and higher premiums for the next 3+ years. (insurance company wins)
    3. Insurance company spends man hours tracking down the driver of the truck and dealing with the insurance company and getting them to pay. (zero ROI for this scenario, so a loose for the ins. company)
    4. OP, Tacoma World, or the local PD find the driver and give the insurance company the info. (Insurance company expends little effort and does a little bit of paperwork, I'd call that a win).

Ahhh, you are correct.... I didn't scroll through all their pictures because their website layout sucks. They do have a truck that looks almost identical. Unfortunately no good pictures of the drivers side of that particular truck. Rack behind the cab and light bar above.... The rear axles don't appear to be red in OPs picture though.

I gave it to the insurance but they came back and said they found nothing. Apparently that’s not uncommon for a commercial plate so my only real hope is the police.

Thanks for confirming the state. That should help!

I believe that is what you were told but for some reason I find that to be really hard to believe. If the trailer plate is basically useless why do we even have them? Presumably that plate is registered to that specific trailer which should be able to be tracked to a truck based on the date and time of the accident. Doesn't add up to me.

I agree 100% it doesn’t seem right. Once I get to speak with the police I will have a clearer picture. I will admit when using the plate search sites online I also don’t get any result.

They can run any plate they want, driving down any street, parking lot, stop light etc. They can't run them for personal reasons, like for a buddy that's pissed in some road rage BS.
