Cost of repair, thoughts?

I don't mind paying for repairs due to the fact that I don't have a place to do it myself. For some reason I feel that the cost is high and I am curious on others thoughts. They will have my truck for four days while I am traveling to do the repairs.

Replacing:
- Steering rack
- Inner and outer tie rods
- Passenger side upper ball joint
- Alignment

Parts:

How much of the cost is for labor?

 

I think all that (not the upper ball joint) is going to run me about $1,100 or $1,200,
I was talking to the folks yesterday. OEM parts. I haven't heard back from them yet,
so this might not be as right as I hope it is ...

If you go with oem rack it should come with new inner tie rods.

I highly recommend OEM on rack if you can afford it. My $300 aftermarket rack inner tie rods loosened up in less than 10k miles and it has a leaky seal.

 

Yep - Got priced $1200 for the same repair. Not an OEM rack in my bill. I decided to do it all myself. After doing all the work and having WWIII with my Tacoma. Hating it for a bit. And then liking it again I can see why maybe paying that would of been a better idea! lol Not too bad considering those new parts will last a very long time if they are OEM

 

$1200 for parts and labor sounds pretty good to me. And OEM suspension parts are a must

 

I'm guessing rack is not in that quote unless cheap aftermarket

 

If that includes everything that seems pretty reasonable. Toyota quoted me 1800$ for upper and lower ball joints, tie rods, and labor. I kindy declined their offer. I know the Toyota steering racks are not cheap...

 

How much are OEM steering racks going for these days? $600 range from Gunny?

 

That actually doesn't sound like a bad quote at all for all that labor/parts...I'm guessing this is through an independent shop an not through Toyota? Toyota would probably charge you triple that amount for that work.

 

Well a couple years back I had the ball joints replaced at Toyota which costed $625 so in my opinion, your price for all that is pretty good.

 

I replaced both (L/R) lower ball joints on mine with OEM for $215 (parts) and $50 labor charge - Say $275 total

 

Holy cow...just the lowers or both (lowers/uppers)?

 

I just got a OEM rack for $490.70...

Depends where The OP lives If in the Great Brine belt things will come apart fighting tooth and nail .

Why just one ball joint have the others been done ??

I think I paid Close to $1500.00 get my alignment done the first time .

 

It is a independent shop, that is very detailed. They have done work for me in the past and I was very pleased. But when I got this quote! I was a little shocked. But from what I read here and a little research, I am good with the cost.

The Steering rack is not OEM, but coming from a very trusted source. Since it is not OEM, the shop will provide an extended warranty.

 

The dealer they got my rack from had it in stock. But the c-shaped bushing had to come from
somewhere, ida know, Timbuktu maybe . Anyhow... I just picked up the truck, it steers so
nice now! The near-by shop I took it to, Southeast Overland in Seneca SC, seems filled with
knowledgeable people and they're doing really cool work back in the shop... the fellow who
worked on my truck was working on a frame up restoration of what looked like a tacoma
when I showed up...

Maybe I don't belong in this thread, trying to contribute more though since everyone is so helpful.
99 Tacoma here, 4x4, 4 cyl. My steering rack is leaking and needs to be replaced.

I got quotes from shops all over my area, ranging from $600-$1000, non OEM I'm almost positive.
Then I found a shop that does rack and pinion work; that's all they work on. Since its a specialty shop, I thought they were gonna be pricey.
They quoted me at $500, parts, labor and tax, out the door. Plus they give a 1 year warranty on parts and labor. My old mechanic would give me a 90 day warranty on all parts and labor. So I'll be going next week to get that done, seems legit.
