Any issues with 255s mounted on the 17" steelies and rubbing? I'm considering ditching my 16" alloys for FJ steelies (tires are much cheaper in 255/80r17) but I don't want to end up with rubbing issues by changing the offset. I know the 3rd gen TRDOR alloys work with 255/85r16 but not sure if steelies + 255s will fit. Also where did you order the steelies from? Just curious.

    I ordered off of eBay.

My current setup includes about 2" of lift and 1.25" spacers, I wanted the wider stance. As I currently sit I had rubbing on the rear of the fender flare that I trimmed. I still have a little rubbing on the front of the inner plastic while compressed, but noting a little heat gun action won't cure. I have not had any contact with the cab mount at this time.

I will be on a few trails this weekend and I'm waiting to see how that goes before I any more cutting or using the heat gun.
I also have a different set of springs/shocks that will give me a full 3" of lift but I have to wait until I get new UCAs before they go in.
Based on what I'm seeing the extra lift would probably eliminate the rubbing or at least the majority of it.

All that to say, if you are stock or just a little lift you will need to do a little trimming/adjustment of plastic with the steelies and 255/80r17.
It all depends on your comfort level.
I have a vision for my truck and have no problem with cutting / banging / heating to get me there.

Note: this information is based on my experience so far.

Just buy some pizza cutters and sell your stockers on Craigslist or FB marketplace

    Just get a set!
I replaced my oem tires for a set of 265/70/17 AT. Then I found this thread and just had to go Tall & Skinny.
I'm by no means a rich guy but some times you just got to make things happen.

I didn't have the money, but it was an easy decision for me because my stock BFG Rugged Trails wouldn't even get off my flat yard with wet grass. They weren't worth the money the dealership put into them to make it CPO. I tried to get them to put KO2 on, but no dice. 2 months later, I just bought what I wanted, and sold the stockers to an older guy for a hell of a deal. Made his day.

That looks good. That was the direction I wanted to go with my 1st gen. I decided the FJ steelie was going to make for a heavy wheel.

I ran across some inexpensive alloys that sort of mimic the steelie. I think this particular wheel (or design) has been around a long time. I swear I remember seeing these on 80s mini trucks. It's one of those wheels that a few companies put their name on. I think American Racing also sells this wheel.

Without the unsightly center cap, it could almost pass as a steelie if you squint.

This is how I remember them.

I looked at that style of alloy but only found 8"wide or wider in 17".
I really wanted to stay at 7-7.5" wide.

To get a taller tire, what's the benefit of going skinny?

    Benefits of a narrower tire:
    1. Less rolling resistance - better fuel economy
    2. Can cut easier through mud, sand, and snow
    3. Typically lighter which can improve acceleration and stopping performance
    4. Will almost always fit better in the wheel well and require less trimming than a wider tire
    5. For airing down, a taller and skinnier tire allows for longer contact patch which can increase traction while off-roading
    6. Taller tires have more sidewall and when aired down can result in a softer ride

This is the mentality that results in others having to waste their time restating what has already been said. Thanks for clarifying your time is more valuable than the next person's

I agree. Especially when it is super easy to simply search a specific thread for a keyword or two to find the info that is needed.
