Cause it would be funny if people that are worried about a spare tire stem that will never be punctured while offroading were also running fumoto valves.

Guess you can't put two and two together huh?

I flipped my spare last night on my 18. I felt no resistance taking it back up. Cable tension felt the same as when I dropped. I wonder if something is going on with your chain setup to make it that much harder to lift?

I'm sure it's the same way bumper's get ripped off. See it on here often. I'm not one to take my truck out and do that, so for me, it's just easier to flip the spare and fill with air when it needs it.

No, actually dragging a bumper makes complete sense and is very easy to do. Breaking a rubber valve stem that is not only that far up under the ass end and that close to the axle ( IE: pivot point ) but also above the edge of the tire ...the odds are astronomical

And that's why I flipped mine. I bet it has happened to someone at some point however.

With all of the clearly valid concerns and intelligent points being put forth in this thread I am shocked that no one has thought to ask the OP how the fak he is going to operate his OE jack without the OE tool set ? I would give my left nut to be there the day that he is on the side of the highway with a flat tire ...all excited that he gets to put his 8 harbor freight extensions together to lower his spare... pulls out his jack ...and realizes he is f'd

The OPs last post was in 2015. I'm guessing nobody will be asking him much.

...it's probably because he got a flat, couldn't jack his truck up, had to hitch hike with a trucker that made forcible man love to him and dumped his body

"09" 4x4 access cab, I lowered my spare for the first time, although I experienced no problems everything worked just fine, I have to agree with the OP in that this equipment is really prone to breaking, I wouldn't put much pressure on those thumb screws, however in defense of Toyota, I think the tool is adequate! I think getting a flat tire today is not as common as it once was (I'm in my 70's) I am a good example, having the truck since 2009 and never needing the spare, (believe me, Tires are much better today) plus many carry "Roadside Assistance Ins" my opinion is if you are experiencing a lot of use, carry your spare elsewhere or get a better lowering unit as the op suggests, jmop

It’s times like that abysmal thread that I wish we could downvote, Reddit style.

I haven’t read it beyond the first line, but I keep seeing the links and I’m just “what are you, 14? Give it a rest.”

Meh, I added an extension to mine so I could check the pressure without dropping the tire but I still lower it once a year and spray the hoist mechanism down with oil.

Goofy side story, when I was in high school in the 80s a couple of friends used to keep their liquor stashed in the spare under the bed, wrapped up in rags. One had a Datsun and the other two drove Toyotas.

Same here, bringing the spare up is the same, no matter how the the valve stem is pointed. The cable bracket only contacts the center of the wheel so IT doesn't know if you flipped the tire to pre-2010 methods of spare mounting. Some pencil neck at Toyota had to have dreamed up the change order for final assembly of the truck to put the valve stem up. Perhaps so some would need to have the dealer do the air pressure check instead of the owner?
